On Thursday night, linebacker Bart Scott told the Ravens he wanted to test the free-agent market even though he was considering a five-year offer to stay. His step into free agency has taken him to the New York Jets. The Jets and Scott's agent, Harold Lewis, have agreed in principle to a five-year, $40 million deal, according to multiple sources, but the deal still needs Scott's endorsement.

Scott arrived at the Jets facility early Friday morning to meet with his former defensive coordinator, Rex Ryan, who is now the head coach of the team.

If he accepts the offer, Scott will leave the Ravens after seven productive years in which he's had 433 tackles and 16 sacks. His best season was in 2006 when he made the Pro Bowl and the All-Pro team. In that season, he had 103 tackles and 9½ sacks.

Bottom line is if you are replacing Barton with Scott that is clearly an upgrade!!!

Linebacker Bart Scott and the New York Jets agreed to a six-year deal worth $48 million on Friday, according to Scott's agent Harold Lewis.

Earlier in the day the Jets offered a five-year, $40 million deal. When New York upped the offer by a year, Scott chose the Jets over Baltimore.

ESPN

I don't think it's a great signing but it's not bad either.

They also re-signed Brandon Moore and traded for Lito Sheppard.

I'm not sold on Sheppard. He played 16 games last year and had just 21 tackles, 1 INT and 4 PBUs. He lost his job at LCB to Asante Samuel and played a lot of slot, but still, Kevin Dockery had better numbers in fewer games at nickel for the Giants. His career started off great, but it's been downhill since 2007. It's not so much INTs that I look at, but pass deflections, which indicates a guy's playing tight enough coverage and getting his hands on balls (no homo!). That he got his hand on the ball just five times in 16 games last season, it's not a good sign. But he could very well thrive in this system and return to form. In 2006, he did get 6 picks and 19 PBUs in 13 games.

And I think Lowery's gonna be good. He's probably best suited for a Cover 2 (or some kind of zone scheme to hide his deficiencies), but he's got great technique and smarts and can be effective. If Sheppard can be what he was and Lowery progresses (I'm pretty confident he will), that's a top secondary, even with bleh at FS. Ya'll need a rangy FS, and it ain't Jim Leonard.
