I would think he's got a few good years left in him. The Jets have to be in win-now mode anyway with all the old people signed last off season. Get Ray Lewis and try to win this year. Not like it's going to happen, the Juets always lose, but it's worth a shot.

Didn't you guys JUST go through this with Favre?

Lewis is 34, that drastic decline into sucking is coming and real soon. Take him out of that Baltimore defense and add in the New York factor (85% of free agent that come to NY suck. FA's over 32 suck 110% of the time) and you'll have you guys hating him by November '09.

Not like that's anything new around here.

Rob is right. Besides, you think Lewis comes here for a reasonable, age-appropriate deal? Ray Lewis, based on his status (Pro Bowl selections included) and his massive ego, will probably want a 5-year deal with an annual salary that'd make him among the highest paid defensive players. He's coming off a 7-year, $50M contract and he said something like, "I'm not playing less, so why I should get paid less?" If you're making a run at him, I think negotiations start at 5 years, $40M with like $20M guaranteed. He's lost a couple steps and is nowhere near the coverage 'backer he was and he was never good at shedding blocks. He's always needed a massive DT or two in front of him to keep the guards off. His whining was a big part of the reason they drafted Ngata. Right now, he's pretty good against the run and does a good job of padding his tackle stats by hustling to the ball and catching people when they're surrounded. And, of course, his best asset is diagnosing plays and calling audibles. But, physically, he's not a dynamic, play-making linebacker. He's not worth the money he'll get. Players like him are always the last to admit that they've declined and are nearing the end of their careers. Ray would be on some sh*t like, he prayed hard and God told him he can play another 8 years and he's been blessed.

Besides, run-stuffing ILB isn't your problem. You need more pass-rushing and/or better coverage skills from your linebackers. Too often you saw guys getting wide open underneath and over the middle. And too often you saw QBs with enough time to sip a caramel macchiato and read The New Yorker before getting off a throw. The Jets'd be better off going after Karlos Dansby or Terrell Suggs. Or, they could just hope Gholston pans out.
