In a session with reporters that lasted almost 20 minutes, Toomer criticized the team for a number of things, including their failure to use him down the stretch as they exercised their "agenda" to use younger receivers such as Domenik Hixon, Steve Smith and tight end Kevin Boss.

"The last couple of games I wasn't a big part of the offense and we lost a big percentage of the games (four of the last five)," Toomer said after the event that was organized by the Home Depot. "I feel like you can't tell me (that) didn't play a big role in it. I think it did."

"It just seems like some of those games, it didn't seem the same. Last year, when everybody's jobs were on the line, everything was pedal to the metal," Toomer said in what appeared to be a not-so-veiled reference to Tom Coughlin's job hanging by a thread after the 2006 season. "All of a sudden, this year, it's a different kind of feeling."

Asked later if he feels now like he should have spoke up, Toomer replied, "No, because no matter what, they have an agenda. They're going to go through what they're going to do. I could talk until I'm blue in the face. It's not going to make any difference. I know after dealing with the head coach, that's kind of how he is. You can talk to him and do all of that, but if he has something in his mind, that's what's going to go on."

But, but, I always thought Amani was the classy one. But there he goes, shooting off his mouth on the way out. Just like that douchebag Tiki. They both managed to fool the fans for a long time, but show their true stripes in the end. I hope they give #81 to that big, 6'6" receiver with hands like Larry Fitzgerald and leaping ability like LeBron that we get in the 3rd round. Just like Kenny Phillips got #21. f*ck Toomer! We should boo every time we hear his name.

So a person lacks class if they speak their minds once in 13 years? Silliness.

I think Toomer saying what he did was motivated by frustration and some selfishness. He'd been saying from even before the season that he was thinking about his upcoming free agency and, more than ever before in his career, was looking to put up big numbers. Few athletes ever think or admit they're done. And in Toomer's case, he's made enough spectacular plays the last few years to where he's probably convinced that he's still a quality Z receiver. Muhsin Muhammad had 65 catches for 923 yards this season and he, in age and talent, is pretty comparable to Toomer. Muhammad did that as the #2 behind Steve Smith and with Delhomme at QB. Over here, Toomer had his fewest yards in a full season since '98. He's a 34-year-old receiver who's played second fiddle to Plaxico for four years, has put up less than ideal numbers for a split end in that time, and he takes into free agency some sucky stats. Plaxico being gone was his chance to shine and it didn't happen. Hixon was the constant at X and he was on package rotation at Z with Smith. The team tailspinned, he didn't get a second ring and they f*cked with his future earnings. Oh, he mad cuz he ain't stylin' on 'em.

I can understand where he's coming from. But I can (and will) make the argument that he should zip it because he's not that good. He caught 55% of the 88 balls thrown to him this year. Muhammad put up better numbers because he was thrown to 20 more times and caught 60% of his. Toomer, even in his prime, never got separation consistently and was a body catcher. His lost step(s) exacerbates the no separation thing and he's got an inaccurate QB who doesn't hit receivers in stride. Of course his numbers are gonna suffer. Also, Steve Smith caught 70% of the balls thrown to him and was by far Eli's most reliable target. An argument could be made that Smith deserved even more of Toomer's post-Plax playing time at flanker than he got. It ain't so much the coaches.

Regardless, any time a Giants offensive player criticizes the coaches, I'll support the player. Because they do deserve criticism. Gilbride and Coughlin. Not for Toomer's numbers, but for playing-calling. Obvious sh*t (like the pass-heavy first half of the Eagles game), small sh*t that I nitpick and for an overall lack of creativity. The best compliment I can pay Gilbride is: There have only been four games the last two seasons in which I hated his play-calling and/or blamed it for a loss. Rarely has he dialed something up that impressed me. Better than Hufnagel, but it's average at best. This offense has never fully utilized all its weapons. And I'm glad every time one of the players steps up and says something.

If anybody forgot: I was with Tiki 99% in his criticisms of the coaching (except for that "I retired because Coughlin took away my joy" bullshit, which I don't even think he believed) and I don't think he said anything about Eli or Coughlin that wasn't true or that fans hadn't said. And it's safe to say that 9/10 times when I use the word "classless," it's in jest.

Those are all fair points, Strider, and you certainly break down the game more than most people I know. I just questioned the classy part. I still can't think of many players in the league who handle themselves better than Toomer has over the years. Then again you were probably mostly joking with that part.
