Floyd and Jackson also had semi serious injuries if I remember right(Floyd's more serious, Jackson's more frequent). There is usually a reason things like this happen to pitchers. |

The Dodgers rushed Jackson to the majors when he clearly wasn't ready. |

MM, are you trying to tell us that not every pitcher comes up at 19-21 years old, and dominates a la Dwight Gooden? I don't get it. Why not? Shouldn't they all, Hughes and Jackson included, instantly be 20 game winners? |

With Edwin Jackson it wasn't a matter of maturity or mental readiness. He came up as a 19 year old and pitched fine (walked a few too many hitters, but not too many that he couldn't handle tha NL). It was his next season, as a 20 year old, where the wheels fell off the bus. That season, and every season after for Jackson, he couldn't get out major or minor league hitters. Something else happened there. My guess is a deterioration of stuff led to control issues and overall sucktitude. With Hughes it was mechanical/physical. He simply wasn't throwing as hard. When you lose MPH off your fastball while recovering from an injury and facing ML hitters for the first time your fans should be fine with an era in the mid 4s with the kind of secondary numbers Hughes put up. |

They probably would be... considering that'd be about half what it is now. The secondary numbers suck, too. I wasn't pleased with what I saw last season, but I know a lot of people were. Those people, I'm sure, were optimistic based on the 4.46 + playoffs + minor-league hoopla. They were disappointed this season because Hughes, who wasn't coming off an injury then, regressd. Homie, you're talking about his post-injury performance last season. That can be shrugged off and blamed on the hamstring and ankle. What's more troubling for me is what he did in his starts this year. The stuff and the location weren't there and he stunk, before getting injured again. I think a "prove-it-first" approach or even cynicism is understandable. I liked his potential. When I saw him in the Future's Game, I saw a 94-95 mph fastball that he had great control of. It looked straight, but it had zip and was well-placed. And, obviously, the curveball had a nice loop. I don't know what happened to him along the way or why his stuff seemingly deserted him. In the second half of last season, maybe his mechanics fell apart or he was afraid to push off. But what he did in the early part of this year is disconcerting, considering there was no excuse. People who aren't at all bothered, I think, are blinded by optimism, hype and hope. |

Did he get that in spring training? Moreover, to make that argument is almost to use injury-proneness as the excuse. |

Enter Matt23 (he'll be an ace), Homie (he'll be a Cy Young candidate in 2008), and MM (I'm a stupid old asshole). |

Nah, I am very bothered by this year. I was at his last start with Chris Stewart behind the plate. I was sick to my stomach. I am still hopeful, but this year has been a huge disappointment. |

I think it's time to stop hoping for that ace you were saying he was going to develop into. After the gutless display I saw this year I'll be happy if he turns into a very good middle of the rotation pitcher. |

For now that's what I will hope for (competent starter), and if I see signs, I will renew my faith in his ability to be a top of the rotation guy. I want to see what he can do in a full, injury-free season, and as of right now, he hasn't shown he can even stay on the field. |

Hopefully, Hughes injured his ribs during spring training and that's why he sucked ass this year (but Homo will tell you he was dominant in the Chicago start! 2 innings! :bc: ). Bottom line, he can't be counted on to either, A- stay healthy, or B- pitch well. If I'm the Yankees, he comes into 2009 as the 6th pitcher on the depth chart. You can't make the mistake of guaranteeing him a rotation spot again. He cannot be counted on. |

I bring up the Chicago game when people say he throws 88-91. While I am a big fan of Hughes, simply because of what he can/could do when he is/was on, I am perfectly aware that he may never be the top 10 cy young pitcher he should have been with the stuff he had two years ago. |
