Speaking of which this year is the big 2-1.  No longer will I be Ronald Stevens of Burlington, Vermont.

I had one made. I was Max Powers from Boston Massachusetts (went to school in upstate NY, figured another state would be smart). Sometimes bouncers would laugh at the name and let me in knowing full well the ID was fake.

Did you pick the name for the ID or they're pre-made? Because Max Powers sounds like a superhero who's secret identity is as a World's Strongest Man competititor. It's almost "McLovin" bad. And, if the kids are reading this, you're probably better off picking a region not known for a distinct accent. Make the whole act more believable and easier to pull off.

 Made me think of McLovin too

I'm sure the Yankees offered a lot to Cole. I'd be shocked if they let him go over a million or two.

I believe he was offered over 4 million by the Yankees and Boras was asking 10 million signing bonus.

I picked the name, mostly to be funny, the ID wasn't that expensive. I had my chalked ID as a backup and a friend of mines who was older, but didn't look too much like me

Cole supposedly wants 8 million and a Major League contract. Brackman got half that.

As I mentioned with Darvish, the money doesn't bother me in this case. I could care less what his bonus would be. They can't give every big named pitcher an MLB contract. They'd be tying up too many spots on the 40 man roster for guys who won't immediately be up in the majors and don't have the minor league service time to warrant protecting them from the Rule V Draft.

Brackman is a moot point this year in that regard because being on the 60 day DL removed him from tying up a spot on the 40 man, but they can't hand out MLB contracts every year. I bet it was that insistence, not the money, which was the main hangup on the Yankees' end.

Well, I guess this guy WAS a greedy bitch. I could never have imagined the Yankees not coming close to a young stud's asking price. Boras needs to be abducted by guys in masks and basically tortured for the sh*t he pulls. His life needs a reality check

From the Post:

Quote:

The Yankees and first-round pick Gerrit Cole, a California high school righty pitcher, have until today to agree to a deal, or Cole won't be allowed to sign with the club that used the 28th pick to take him.

"We are working on it," scouting director Damon Oppenheimer said.

Cole, who has a scholarship from UCLA if he spurns the Yankees, is being advised by agent Scott Boras. However, industry sources say Cole's father, Mark Cole, is running the show and is on the demanding side.

"They ask me for information and I give it to them," Boras said.

It kind of makes you wonder if he just has a controlling father.

Yankees' top pick Cole won't sign

JIM BAUMBACH

jim.baumbach@newsday.com

8:11 PM EDT, August 15, 2008

Seven hours before Friday night's 11:59 deadline for the Yankees to sign their first-round pick, general manager Brian Cashman conceded defeat. Gerrit Cole was so set on attending UCLA instead of signing with the Yankees that he recently conveyed to team officials that he didn't even want to hear an offer.

"We wish we could have signed him," Cashman said. "We wish we could have negotiated with him and made that attempt. But it just wasn't meant to be."

Considered one of the best pitching prospects in the draft, Cole dropped to the Yankees at pick No. 28 because teams didn't want to deal with agent Scott Boras' demands. But money has never been an issue for the Yankees, so they were happy to select Cole, a righthander from Orange (Calif.) Lutheran High School.

They were convinced at the time that he would choose the Yankees over UCLA.

"A player and his family made a life choice here about what's best for their son at this point in time and that has nothing to do with the negotiations," Cashman said. "We never got to the negotiations. They made a decision, and it was a different one than we would have expected based on where we were when we made the selection in the draft.

"Obviously, you wouldn't have selected him if you knew they were thinking this way, at all."

The Yankees will receive a second first-round pick in next year's draft as compensation for not signing Cole.

Hmm, it looks like someone wanted to go to college.

By letting some guys walk, the Yankees will receive picks and they get this extra pick for failing to sign Cole, so they can still get some sweet picks, even if they sign a big free agent or two.

You would have thought Cashman would have asked Cole what his feelings were before wasting the first round pick on him......... :wall:
