A dominant bullpen was one of the trademarks of the Yankees' World Series championship teams in the late '90s. Manager Joe Girardi is hoping his club has just gone back to the future. Riding an eight-game winning streak, the Yankees will be looking to bring out the brooms, as they conclude their three-game weekend series at Fenway Park on Sunday night. Right-hander Sidney Ponson will take the mound against Boston lefty Jon Lester, with reliever Damaso Marte a part of the Yankees' relief corps after he arrived in Beantown on Saturday. The lefty reliever, who was acquired from Pittsburgh, is the lone southpaw in the Yankees' bullpen, but, along with Edwar Ramirez, he gives Girardi more options when his club is facing a tough left-handed bat late in the game. "When I'm traded, I'm in shock, but when I pitch, I feel great and happy for throwing in this situation," said Marte, who hurled one-third of an inning on Saturday after he struck out David Ortiz on an 0-2 pitch with the bases loaded in the seventh. "This was my situation before. I feel comfortable." "It almost gives us two lefties in a sense because, with Eddie, we treat him as a lefty a lot of times," Girardi said. "Sometimes, you need two lefties in a game. It gives us more flexibility. What you might see is guys not starting an inning, coming in after one or two outs, depending on how it goes. That might be a little different." The acquisition of Marte would appear to bolster an already strong bullpen that has carried the Bombers to a 47-1 mark when leading after six innings and a perfect 51-0 when leading after eight. The names Ortiz and J.D. Drew with the Red Sox come immediately to mind as powerful lefties who can do damage. "When I pitched in the playoffs here [in 2005], it's the same situation," Marte said, referring to facing Big Papi and the Red Sox in the '05 playoffs as a member of the White Sox. "Every time you pitch, you have to be in control." "It's important to have the lefty, because there's some big left-handed hitters that we're going to face down the stretch here," Girardi said. "There's a couple of big ones here. With names like Mike Myers, Billy Traber and Ron Villone, the Yankees have searched for and found many lefties in their efforts over recent years to build the bridge to Mariano Rivera, but with limited success. "I think it's important that guy, and it's important to have the long guy as well, because then you don't have to the use your bullpen in the sense where you have to throw guys for a couple of innings and then you don't have them the next day," Girardi said. "It just gives us more flexibility, and it's a bullpen that we really like." Pitching matchup NYY: RHP Sidney Ponson (6-1, 4.02 ERA) Ponson is set to make his fifth start of his Yankees season on Sunday against the Red Sox, looking to help keep New York undefeated in his efforts since he switched uniforms from the Rangers. Ponson has not been lights-out in a Yankees uniform, but he is 2-0 with a 4.37 ERA since joining New York, having defeated the Twins his last time out on Monday with 5 2/3 innings of three-run, nine-hit ball. Ponson will be facing Boston for the first time this season, and he's 2-4 with a 7.16 ERA in nine career starts at Fenway Park. BOS: LHP Jon Lester (8-3, 3.20 ERA) Lester continues to be a consistent force for the Red Sox. In his last start, he mowed down the Mariners with 7 1/3 shutout innings, striking out six, and did not issue a walk. Lester has held the opponent scoreless in six of his 21 starts on the season. His only previous start against the Yankees this season was a shutout on July 3 at Yankee Stadium. In 10 Fenway starts, Lester is 4-1 with a 2.93 ERA. He is holding opponents to a .259 batting average. Tidbits With two more hits, including a solo homer on Saturday, Robinson Cano has hit safely in eight straight games after the All-Star break. Cano set a new season high by extending his hitting streak to eight games on Saturday, and he has recorded seven consecutive multihit games after the break. Since 2005 when he debuted, Cano's .339 post-All-Star batting average is second only to Placido Polanco in the Majors. ... Third baseman Alex Rodriguez will celebrate his 33rd birthday on Sunday. He is 14-for-38 (.368) with five homers and 13 RBIs on his birthday over his career. Too bad we send shithead Ponson to the mound tonight. Fecking KC couldn't win either of the other past two nights. I guess them winning one is better than none but it pisses me off that there is a very good chance we gain jackshet tonight. |

They just showed Fenway on ESPN and it is absolutely pouring. This game might not be played, which isn't a terrible thing. Skip over Ponson and have Moose go tomorrow. |

I was telling my dad not to get too emotionally invested in tonight's game. We'd have all taken 2 out of 3 in this series. Why lose our minds over a game that we should lose on paper. I've watched Lester a little this year and I've come to the conclusion that he is what Andy Pettitte was to us back in the day. The guy has guts and he pitches like it. I see him pitch in and out of jams all the time, like clockwork. And it isn't luck either. He'll make his best pitches when he has to. And he's also fully capable of throwing a gem in a must win situation. Where's lymphoma when you need it? I expect a loss tonight for sure. |
