BOSTON -- A fresh look for the Yankees comes just as the club is making a move in the American League East. On Saturday, the Bombers play the second of their three-game weekend series against the Red Sox at Fenway Park, with Andy Pettitte opposing Boston knuckleballer Tim Wakefield on FOX. Friday night's 1-0 win extended New York's win streak to seven, drawing the Yankees to within two games of second-place Boston in the AL East and three back still of Tampa Bay, which beat Kansas City, 5-3. During Friday's game, the Bombers acquired lefty reliever Damaso Marte and outfielder Xavier Nady from the Pirates for Ross Ohlendorf and three Minor Leaguers. "Guys get used to their roles and they're able to prepare for the situation, and in a sense manage the game and have an idea of when they're coming in," Yankees skipper Joe Girardi said. "When new parts come in, if new parts come, you're able to put guys in situations where they understand pretty quickly what they're going to do." Even with general manager Brian Cashman helping the team with a trade, Girardi realizes the biggest news will eventually be made on the field during the weekend. "Obviously, this time of year, both teams need wins," Girardi added. "The intensity in this series is always off the charts. The atmosphere is always great. We have a big three-game series, and obviously, you always talk about wanting to take series." Pitching matchup NYY: LHP Andy Pettitte (11-7, 3.86 ERA) Pettitte didn't make many mistakes in his eight innings against Oakland on Sunday, giving up four hits and no walks, with the lone run coming in the sixth. But he retired the side in the next two innings, part of six 1-2-3 frames. Pettitte struck out five of the first 11 hitters in the 114-pitch outing. The Yankees had a reliever warming up in the bullpen in the seventh and eighth innings, but they didn't need them. BOS: RHP Tim Wakefield (6-7, 3.69 ERA) Don't let the knuckleballer's record fool you. Wakefield has been one of the most consistent starters in the AL this season. Of late, he has delivered machine-like consistency, going at least seven innings in nine of his past 10 starts and giving up three earned runs or fewer in all but one of those outings. In four July starts, Wakefield is 1-2 with a 2.96 ERA. Wakefield took the loss in his last start, giving up six hits and four runs over seven-plus innings against the Angels. This is his second start against the Yankees this season. On July 6, Wakefield took a no-decision, giving up four hits and three runs over 6 1/3 innings. Tidbits Entering this weekend's series at Fenway, Yankees relievers have an impressive 1.71 ERA over their past 22 games dating back to June 27, the second game of a doubleheader against the Mets. The club's bullpen ERA is 3.39 overall, the sixth best in the Majors. Among those carrying the load are Edwar Ramirez, retiring 32 of his last 36 batters, and fellow righty Kyle Farnsworth, who has posted 10 straight scoreless outings entering this weekend.
