It said he usually has movement, but was somewhat straight that day.  Anyway I'll take a high schooler that already has Kyle Farnsworth's stuff.

Agreed. Keep stockpiling these talented arms with upside. You'll hit with some, miss with others, and the odds are some will be long-term keepers.

Are there any college catchers who are only a couple of years away worth taking after the first few rounds are over? I don't want to use the first few picks on one, but wouldn't mind one later on.

one of the first picks is going to be a catcher

edit: Buster Posey

I didn't realize you guys were talking about Posey. If he falls the Yankees will probably take him. He's this years Matt Weiters, only he isn't as good and he wants more money.

Patrick at Pinstripe Plus.com thinks the Yankees will take Mike Montgomery. Has decent velocity for a lefty, but seems like just another overrated lefty that will be a first rounder because he is left handed.

I know nothing about the draft. I love how the Internet has created all these people who think they're experts on the draft (except Homie ).

Rondel White's 4th cousin Chaka Luther King. The odd thing is King isn't even a baseball player, he's a director.

Baseball America's prediction:

28. NEW YORK (AL). The perfect scenario for the Yankees would be for Hosmer to fall to fill their void at first base, and they wouldn't blink at the $6 million or so he'd cost them. But that's much more a dream than reality. If New York wants to go for a high-priced, high-ceiling player, Kelly is probably going to be the best one available. Like Hicks, Kelly wants to play every day rather than pitch as a pro. If the Yankees play it straight, they could take California first baseman David Cooper or one of the high school lefties.

Projected Pick: CASEY KELLY, ss/rhp, Sarasota (Fla.) HS.

Posey gone. 5th to the Giants. I wonder if they are willing to pay or if they are calling his bluff.

Yankees take Gerrit Cole

Player Name: Gerrit Cole
Position: Starting Pitcher
School: Orange Lutheran HS (Calif.)
School Type: High School
Academic Class: Senior
Birthdate: 09/08/90
Height: 6'3"
Weight: 195 lbs.
Bats: Right
Throws: Right
Report Date(s): 03/08/08
Game(s): Tesoro HS

Fastball: Cole was throwing 95-98 mph early and settled in at 92-94 throughout his start.
Fastball movement: He usually has plus arm-side sink and bore, though he was fairly straight in this outing.
Slider: It's an average pitch now, which he throws 78-82 mph, but it projects as a plus pitch in the future. It has some depth coming from a 3/4 arm angle.
Changeup: It's a little too firm at 79-80 mph, but he's got a good feel for it.
Control: He's an above-average strike-thrower for a high schooler, letting his stuff work for him in the zone.
Poise: His makeup on the field can be an issue, as he gets animated with umpires and teammates at times.
Physical Description: Cole is a projectable high school right-hander who compares a bit to Kyle Farnsworth.
Medical Update: Healthy.
Strengths: His projectability and his stuff, with the ability to throw three average to plus pitches, and to throw them for strikes.
Weaknesses: He has some mechanical issues with his delivery, with an arc in the back and a tendency to throw across his body; he gets too emotional on the mound.
Summary: A projectable high school right-hander with the capability already to throw a fastball up into the upper 90s is bound to garner interest. Throw in a future plus slider and a changeup, all for which he can throw for strikes, and it's no wonder Cole is considered one of the top prep pitchers in the class. He's going to have to work out some kinks in his delivery and he's got Scott Boras as an advisor, but neither of those issues should keep him from being drafted early.

Kinda wanted Shooter Hunt with that pick. Mostly because his name is so cool and he has a BIG curveball.

Seriously though, Cole seems to be a very well received pick. Some are calling him the best pure arm in the draft. Maybe Shooter will fall to 44.

I like the pick and it would be money if Shooter did fall to 44 like Joba fell to 41 last year.

Cole's Fastball is Arresting

March 26, 2008

With radar guns on him, the Orange Lutheran right-hander strikes out 12 in a 16-0 victory over Yucaipa.

If there are any California Highway Patrol officers in need of radar guns, all they need to do is show up to a baseball game in which right-hander Gerrit Cole of Orange Lutheran is pitching.

With scouts pointing more than two dozen radar guns toward Cole, he unleashed a 96-mph fastball to strike out highly regarded third baseman Matt Davidson of Yucaipa in the first inning of Tuesday night's Anderson Bat National Classic quarterfinal game at Cal State Fullerton.
nsistently throwing between 93 and 95 mph with precision control. He finished with 13 strikeouts, one walk and gave up one hit in six innings during a 16-0 victory.

And for good measure, he hit a two-run home run over the center-field fence in the fourth inning.

Orange Lutheran (11-1), ranked No. 1 in the Southland by The Times, will play Loxahatchee (Fla.) Seminole Ridge in the first game of a semifinal doubleheader at 5:15 p.m. Wednesday at Fullerton. The other semifinal will match Encino Crespi (8-3) against Washington (D.C.) St. John's at 8 p.m.

Second baseman Tyler Smith had four hits and third baseman Pierce Bily had three hits for Lutheran.

Cole is a 6-foot-3, 200-pound senior who signed with UCLA but probably will be a first-round draft choice in June. He has struck out 41 in 23 innings and has given up only nine hits.

Cole, who was also throwing his curveball and changeup for strikes, struck out six consecutive batters between the second and fourth innings. Of the first 13 Yucaipa batters, nine went down on strikeouts. One batter reached base when the ball got past catcher Robby Vaughn on a swinging third strike, but Cole picked him off.

Chad Erickson's single with one out in the fifth was the only hit for Yucaipa (8-3).

Davidson, a 6-3, 215-pound junior, came in with four home runs on the season and will be a likely pro prospect for 2009. He struck out three times against Cole.

Cole's next appearance on the mound is expected to be next Wednesday night for an important Trinity League game at Santa Ana Mater Dei.

He has a little bit of Hughes in him:

2nd Baseman David Adams, U. of VA

Player Name: David Adams
Position: Second base
School: University of Virginia
School Type: College
Academic Class: Junior
Birthdate: 05/15/87
Height: 6'2"
Weight: 205 lbs.
Bats: Right
Throws: Right
Report Date(s): 05/09/08
Game(s): North Carolina

Focus Area

Comments
Hitting Ability: While Adams hasn't had a great season with the bat this spring, he's always hit in the past, including with wood in the Cape Cod League. His approach is going the other way and using his hands for contact.
Power: It's not a big part of his game, but like with a lot of Virginia players, he'll probably show more -- 10 to 15 homers, perhaps -- once he's out of UVA's huge home park.
Running Speed: He's got below-average speed.
Base running: While speed is not a tool, he's a good baserunner who has used his instincts to steal some bases in college.
Arm Strength: He's got more than enough arm to be a good second baseman at the next level.
Fielding: He's adequate at second, with good hands and turns the double play well.
Range: His range is just average.
Physical Description: Adams is a decent-sized middle infielder who isn't flashy but gets the job done
Medical Update: Healthy.
Strengths: History of good hitting ability, great makeup, plays the game the right way.
Weaknesses: He hasn't hit well this spring, he doesn't have any one tool that jumps out.
Summary: The University of Virginia has become a good proving ground for legit pro prospects in recent years, and while Adams isn't Ryan Zimmerman, he should do pretty well in this year's Draft. A solid hard-nosed type, he gets the ultimate praise from scouts as being a real "baseball player." He's hit in the past, but didn't fare so well this season, which might affect him somewhat, but likely not too much.
