ESPN guilty of balk

Morgan & Miller keep Manny's 'scoop' from viewers

By BOB RAISSMAN
DAILY NEWS SPORTS COLUMNIST

Posted Tuesday, April 24th 2007, 4:00 AM

The most notable piece of information coming out of ESPN's Sunday Yankees-Red Sox telecast had nothing to do with the network's attempts to portray Daisuke Matsuzaka as a man who has reinvented the art of throwing a baseball.

And it was absolutely no surprise that Peter Gammons ran out of adjectives by the third inning.

No more digressing. Up until then, there was reason to believe Manny Ramirez is eccentric. Now there is reason to believe that somewhere under those flowing dreads is an electronic monitoring device, which allowed him to eavesdrop on Jon Miller and Joe Morgan.

Morgan spilled the beans after Manny completed the first leg of that Four Slamma Jamma off Chase Wright.

Before Sunday night's game, according to Morgan, Ramirez told him - personally - that this was the night he would break out of his batting slump. Morgan said he did not report Ramirez's bold prediction during his first plate appearance because he did not want to put "pressure" on the Boston outfielder.

Morgan was serious. But all kidding aside, unless Manny is monitoring ESPN's broadcast, how the heck would he know what Morgan is saying on the air? And why would Morgan even give a spit? This is just another case of ESPN voices treating fans like morons.

Morgan owed it to viewers to deliver the Manny info the first time he stepped to the plate rather than worry about putting "pressure" on Ramirez, or any other player. During Ramirez's first at-bat, all Morgan talked about was the problem the slugger was having "getting his timing down."

Miller was no darn better. He also waited until after the third-inning homer to report what he already knew. In the fourth inning, Miller said: "He (Ramirez) did say to me - and you as well - tonight was the night where things turn around for him."

Miller and Morgan have a future. A future in anchoring the late news.

CAMERA CAN LIE:

ESPN created its own fib with a sequence video of Boston's four-HR barrage. At the end of the third inning, replays of each dinger aired. The fourth, hit by Jason Varitek, was followed by a reaction shot of a stunned Boston GM, Theo Epstein, saying, "Oh my God." This replay was taken out of sequence. Epstein went gaga after J.D. Drew hit the second HR. ... After their great Dice-K buildup, Miller/Morgan/Gammons didn't offer a credible critique of the pitcher's performance, which did not come close to matching all the hype. Perhaps the most honest analysis came during a shot of Alex Rodriguez in the Yankee dugout. His lips, and his Dice-K comment, appeared easy to read: "He's got nothing." . . . Late in Braves-Mets Friday, the SNY crew, led by Gary Cohen, decided it was a good idea to discuss how opponents could be upset over A-Rod's recent HR celebrations. For the SNY guys to go down this road was strange.

They were markedly absent in 2006, not raising a similar question after a Mets celebration was touched off by David Wright's game-winning hit off Mariano Rivera. The SNY guys also have not pursued a similar curiosity - or condemnation - over the Mets' orchestrated dugout dances usually led by the great Jose Reyes.

Is that the smell of home cooking coming out of the SNY booth?

BECK & CALL:

Nice first guess Saturday (Yankees-Red Sox, seventh) by Fox's Tim McCarver. With A-Rod coming to the plate, T-Mac said Terry Francona should pull starter Josh Beckett. McCarver said Beckett was out of gas - Sox were up 7-4 - and did not have the strength to throw "inside" to Rodriguez. "This is a mistake (by Francona)," McCarver said. "This is one hitter too long for Josh Beckett." A-Rod promptly singled to right, driving in Derek Jeter. ... It's now a given: Fox's "Game of the Week" is often more about Joe Buck than the game of the week. Like Saturday, when Buck found it necessary to sing "Happy Birthday" to Francona. ... Another self-absorbed cat - ESPN's Chris Berman - made sure everybody knew he would not be hosting "Baseball Tonight" next week because the NFL draft cannot function without him.

I don't always agree with this dude, but he nailed it this time. He failed to mention how John Miller was going on about how Jeter averages 25 HRs a year. Is there another power hitting Jeter we don't know about it.

Yeah, thank God Francona cut off Buck in the middle of his Birthday song or he probably would have sung the whole thing.

National boradcasters are such jagoffs. Gary Cohen also looks like a penis. I can't stand that whiney little Met fan. He's so typical of the kind of guy Kocur described.
