Why Don't We Work In Hughes Like The Twins Did

With Santana and Liriano. Bring him up, let him get his experience in mid-long relief. That way he isn't throwing a lot of innings and you get his feet wet. If he is dominating in mid-relief, you got a pretty deep pen. Then, when he's shown enough, get his ass in the rotation for the rest of the year. Come August, September, he hasn't pitched nearly the innings he would have if we called him up to start and he was starting in Triple A before that. You can't do wrong following the lead of best pitcher in the game.

Hughes is shaping up to be a big time bust. I don't think the Yankees want to expose him. Look for him to be traded by July 31st. :peace:

Because Liriano is out for the year.

I dont' think they want to put his arm through the rigors of everyday use. For every Santana there is a Liriano. Besides the Pen is way better off than the rotation is right now anyway.

Oh no, you guys didn't. Liriano's injury has nothing to do with the fact he was relieving. If anything, they put him too deep into games since he was dominating. Relief work is good for building guys into the rotation without using them too much. What's better off for a pitcher? 2 innings every couple days or 7 innings(100+ pitches at a pop) every 5? Atlanta put Smoltz in the pen to save him over that reason. It's also good with working in youngers. Plus, it also gets the player acclamated to the majors. Seattle did it with Joel Piniero too. Piniero f*cked himself with the extra wear and tear of winter ball though.

Pineiro was f*cked by Piniella mishandling young pitchers.

Piniero was doing winterball after the Mariners were babying him. Pretty counterproductive.

Good point about liriano, but I just think of bullpen work as more taxing on the arm. I know its totally different, but I think of it like doing 1RM in the gym. If you don't get used to it before you start going for PRs then its a good way to get hurt.

Their plan with Hughes is so specific, and has been carried out so preciecely for so long that I don't think they'd go that route. Santana and Liriano came from other organizations so the twins' plans for those guys were somewhat improv anyway. Add to that the fact that Hughes is probably the Yankees 4th best starting pitcher now and I just don't see it happening.

Sanchez is a guy I could totally see them doing that with though.

I also think it had something to do with Minnesota's bullpen was never as strong as ours and they needed them to throw for the big league club.

We got depth, but it'd be nice to have a true long guy or someone that can throw 2, 3 innings in a situation like tonight. I don't think they need to be working Proctor, Bruney, Vizcaino, or even Henn for innings when the game is out of hand. It'd be a nice way to get Hughes feet wet.

When everyone is healthy Karstens or Rasner will probably take that spot. Most likely Karstens.
