09:38 AM - News: Mets Release Soler

...posted by Matthew Cerrone...

At the Daily News, Adam Rubin reports that the Mets have released RHP Alay Soler, who had a 8.22 ERA in three appearances this spring.

With Jim Duquette as the team’s general manager, the Mets signed Soler during 2004.

Last season for the Mets, Soler was 2-3 with a 6.00 ERA.

According to Rubin’s report, Soler would have been due $826,000 at the major-league level and $620,000 at Triple-A.

Duquette, who now works for the O’s, on Soler, talking with MLB.com in October, 2005…

“When we saw him, he was at the peak of his conditioning and we thought he had a chance to be a solid No. 4 starter…

“He's going to have to go through some level of education in the Minor Leagues, but he's a guy that can move fast.  I think he can be a starter or a reliever, but I don't know how much he's done out of the 'pen.  But he has legitimate stuff.”

…to his credit, i kept hearing that soler was in better shape this spring, but he could not get command of his game…oh well…good luck, buddy…

While the Mets may have been fed up with his performance remember he was signed by Omar’s predecessor and there is no such thing as “chicken feed” when it comes to the Wilpons and money and they did save some cash by releasing him.
