He really is being a prick about the whole contract situation. Just shut up and pitch. He'll get whatever contract he deserves at the end of the year. |

The Yankees should sign him now, the last thing the Yankees need is for Rivera to be extra cautious this year to prevent injury and as a result not giving 100%. |

The Yankees can't bend the rules or make exceptions for one player. Mo of all people should understand that. The Yankees have never done Mo wrong and he's recieved more respect than just about any player in baseball has from their team. I'll give Mo the benefit of the doubt and assume he was lead into these questions and they were taken a bit out of context, but even if that is the case what he said is pretty dissapointing. I thought comments like this were beneith Mo. |

Yeah, I definatly thought Rivera was better than that, but I guess with the whole situation with Bernie he's trying to ensure his future with the team. |

The two situations are not even close to the same thing so Rivera needs to shut it. |

They are all being stupid about Bernie. He was a great Yankee, will get his number retired. Now move on, see you at Old Timers Day in 2 years. Mo will get his money, he should not have gone this whining route. |

The situations aren't the same because Rivera is still a top-flight closer and Bernie Williams is, at best, a 4th outfielder for any other team. I'm surprised because Rivera has never been one to complain like this. There are many possibilities as to why Rivera is doing this. Most likely, he realizes he is 38 years old and he has had arm problems and probably wants a guaranteed contract. Other reasons could have to do with the Bernie Williams situation or maybe its just pride. He has shown minimal signs of age and really no signs that he can't still do the job as well as anyone else. Plus he's been one of the most important members of the team for the last decade. If he wants a contract now, he should get one. In my opinion the Yankees should give him the extentsion now because who knows what the market will be like after the season. |

Mo is saying this stuff for two reasons. First, he's probably a little unsure of his health status and number two he really wants to pitch in the new stadium. |

You guys need to shut the f*ck up not Mo. He's earned the right to ask for a new contract for the future. Mike is ripping Mad Dog right now for his whining about it. |

You are right but he really needs to tone it down.....He sounds like a spoiled little bitch right now and that is definitley not the Mo Rivera we all know...He could have gotten the message across in a much better way... I think this has more than just a little to do with the Bernie situation....I think it's a huge part of this.... |

No matter what the reason is he shouldn't have said anything to the media. This should be kept between Rivera and the Yankee front office. |

What did you think about Zambrano when he said it? Mo has no reason to believe he wont get a contract for the future. What he's doing is saying "put me infront of the team and give me what I want now or you'll be sorry" Why should some players be allowed to pull this crap and some not? They can't make an exception for him or anybody and his comments would suggest he's trying to be a bully about it. I edited this post to show the real post I was respondint too. |

A more foolish comment could't have been made. Mo has every right to be pissed about this. They're paying guys like Giambi , Mussina, and A Rod, huge money and they've brought nothing but dissapointment on many levels. Without MO we don't have ANY of those four rings! |

It won’t help the situation if the Cubs sign Zambrano, as it appears they will, before the start of the season. |

First of all those guys have brought plenty more than dissapointment, second none of those guys would be put above the team and negotiated with in season either, third of all no closer has ever made more money than Mo so this obviously isn't about respect or money. I agree with the last thing you said, to an extent, but the point is no player is to be put infront of the team. |

What have they brought........lofty regular season numbers, and hefty expectations, only to be slapped to reality in the face during the playoffs! You can't say any different, cause they have all failed to win the big games, all of em. |

I think you need to re-check some of those numbers. Or is this going to be one of those things that "numbers don't tell the whole story" about? Were they always perfect in the big games? No. Has anybody always been perfect in big games? No. Giambi has been an on base and slugging machine in most of his playoff series' with the Yankees. Moose has been up and down, but lights out at times, so "nothing" is far from the right word to descibe his contributions. Finally everybodies favorite whipping boy is the sole reason that the 2005 Yankees made the post season and the man who basically carried the 04 team through the playoff games they actually won. I'm tired of the typical Yankee fan response of "we didn't win the world series, so all the new guys must have blown it, but all the old guys are still great". As for the original point, yes, Mo has earned more than any Yankee including Jeter and has gotten more in terms of money, respect, accolades, than any Yankee except Jeter. The point is he of all people should understand that the team comes first and not hold his own greatness over the Yankees heads and make threats. He owes the Yankees just as much as they owe him. |

This thread qualifies for the most ridiculous of the year. In case no one here knows it baseball is still a business and the relationship between the Yankees and Mo is simply employer/employee. If Mo is using this tactic to get one more major contract with a huge payday and it works more power to him. After all he is the greatest relief pitcher in the history of the game. If this tactic doesn’t work then he should shut his mouth and honor his present contract. As long as he doesn’t take this controversy into the regular season where it has an impact on the ball club he has a right to say and do as he pleases No matter, the Yankees have gotten their money's worth out of him. |

Homie, I realize they've had some good post season moments, but nothing consistent, and to me that is the measure of success, consistency, the only player with any consistency throughout all these up and down seasons since 96 is MO. Thats not to say he hasn't failed, but his failures pale in comparison to any other player on the roster. |

Actually with this I agree 100%. Not a single player has been consistently good in every playoff series since 96 except for Mariano and he deserves everything he gets. And yes, if anybody should be able to talk sh*t about getting something he wants it should be him. I'm just dissapointed that he would make threats when its clear he isn't getting what he wants right now because its bad for the team overall. |
