SEOUL, Feb. 9 (Yonhap) -- South Korean major league pitcher Park Chan-ho signed a one-year contract with the New York Mets, the fourth in his 13-year Major League Baseball career, his management company said on Friday.

Park, a former starter for the San Diego Padres, joined the club with an annual salary of US$3 million, said a spokesman for the company, Team 61, declining to reveal details.

Park will likely compete for a spot in the rotation of five starters, analysts said.

Rumors had circulated that Park will play for the San Francisco Giants or the Arizona Diamondbacks.

The 34-year-old Park became the first South Korean pitcher in Major League Baseball when he signed a seven-year contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 1994.

Park failed to shine with the Texas Rangers in four consecutive seasons, having 15 total wins for the Rangers and Padres in 2005 and 2006. He won 113 of his career total 323 games with a 4.37 earned-run-average.

He is scheduled to join the Mets' spring training camp in Port St. Lucie, Florida, next Friday.

The Mets lost the National League Championship to the St. Louis Cardinals in the seventh game of the best-of-seven series last year.

Reports say it is only 660K guarantee and the 3 mil figure is only based on incentives, I like the move since it is low risk!
