Here are three reasons for either side of that debate:

Yes, he will

1. The Manning factor. Coughlin, offensive coordinator John Hufnagel and QBs coach Kevin Gilbride have had Eli Manning under their tutelage for two-plus years now, and at times, it's as if the QB is still a rookie. That falls on Manning, but he's not getting axed; at the very least, Coughlin will almost certainly be looking for a new OC and a new QBs coach in January.

2. The front office. Coughlin will report to a new GM, even if it's a current member of the organization (personnel director Jerry Reese, VP Chris Mara or assistant GM Kevin Abrams). And, not to be discounted at all, Coughlin has two owners who didn't hire him; their late fathers did. John Mara had some input, but Wellington and Bob Tisch brought in Coughlin. John Mara and Steve Tisch may have other ideas.

3. Enough is enough. He has no people skills, and that attitude wears thin on everyone above and below the coach. If things continue to go bad and Coughlin sticks with his stoic routine, as he did in Jacksonville over his final three seasons, fans will be turned off in a hurry. That's a last straw.

No, he won't

1. Stability. When he was brought in, Coughlin's greatest asset was the way he built up the Jaguars from scratch for eight seasons. The Giants wanted a piece of that, a return to the tradition of a storied franchise. He's made several players better, notably Tiki Barber, and there is a core of youth in place to build upon.

2. Injuries. Any NFL team that lost eight starters would be expected to founder. It's a way of life to find replacements for injured players, but all three of Coughlin's seasons have been ridiculously unlucky. There's no explanation for it, other than maybe bad karma.

3. Who's here next year. Not Barber, one of Coughlin's most vocal critics. Michael Strahan will be back, with something to prove following a serious injury, as he did last season. The locker room will still have self-motivating leaders, which is the type of team Coughlin needs.

Statlines

The Giants are fading in the second half of 2006 for any number of reasons. It's just the latest second-half collapse for Tom Coughlin, whose last five seasons as an NFL coach have been struggles to the finish line:

Season Record Finish Skinny

2006 6-5 0-3 Injuries and Eli Manning's regression

2005 11-6 5-4* Same as above, despite winning record

2004 6-10 1-7 Lost Strahan; team couldn't respond

2002 6-10 3-5 End of eight-season tenure with Jaguars

2001 6-10 3-5 Aging team can't stop slide

*includes playoff loss

He SHOULD get fired...and his staff as well. This team has NO discipline, and his game planning and play calling leaves ALOT to be desired! The only way out of this is a new coach and staff!
