Looks like the people who said the Mets were stupid for signing him for 4 years, and that they would be lucky to get 2 good years out of him were right.

For the record, I wasn't one of them. I thought he'd be great the first 2 years, good the 3rd, then show signs of breaking down in the last. I didn't think he would break down like this so fast.

Signing Pedro was a signal to the baseball world that Wilpon was ready to act like a owner of a New York franchise should and bring in a top GM and give him the resources to get the players they need. Pedro was the first piece of the puzzle and paying a fortune for Beltran was the second. Because of these two guys the others followed. The Mets would not be getting ready for the post season if they had not signed Pedro to get the ball rolling. If Pedro is willing to seriously rehabilitate and work out in the off-season and build back his arm strength I can see him being a serviceable pitcher in 2008.

Without signing Pedro we don't get the other big signings and the Mets would still be rebuilding
