Sure sign that Mets are tired of Milledge's antics
BY DAVID LENNON
Newsday Staff Correspondent

September 30, 2006

WASHINGTON - KNOW YOUR PLACE, ROOK!

The hand-scrawled message hung above Lastings Milledge's locker after Friday's 4-3 victory over the Nationals. At the bottom of the two sheets of paper was written, "Your Teammates."

At a time when the Mets should be focusing on the playoffs, it was a disturbing sign.

Milledge, as usual, ate dinner alone seated at his locker, facing inward, as the rest of the Mets crowded the clubhouse cafeteria. Someone had hidden Milledge's street clothes, and one player thought they had been replaced by a dress.

The reason? According to one person familiar with the situation, Milledge - whose reputation is deteriorating quickly - mouthed off to a veteran teammate in Atlanta. Friday's rebuke followed. Apparently, his teammates are becoming more and more annoyed by Milledge's attitude.

"How much does it take to finally wake up?" the person said. "How long before you realize the way you're acting is the opposite of how you should be acting? Fine. Stay asleep, then."

Milledge shrugged when reporters asked him about the sign. When the questions continued, Orlando Hernandez waved them away in an effort to protect the rookie outfielder.

Manager Willie Randolph later came out to talk to Milledge, and the rookie eventually got his clothes back. As for his attitude, that remains an unresolved issue.

Beltran still hurting

Carlos Beltran was describing Friday how his strained right quadriceps still is a problem and is likely to bother him throughout October. "I feel like 80 percent," he said.

Beltran believes he won't be completely healthy until spring training. Asked about taking time off, he smiled and said, "When we win the World Series."

This kid is gone from this team. His last day as a Met will be sunday. He'll be traded for a #4 starter or bullpen guy in the off season. The Beltran blurb is a little more disturbing though.

Milledge is not going anywhere.

In his career maybe. But he's leaving the Mets organization that's for sure.

If you think a player is a future star, you don't trade him because of attitude problems.

If the Brewers could do it again, don't you think they would keep Gary Sheffield?

He can turn out to be a total cancer for the team. Sad thing to see. He needs to do some soul searching this winter..

What makes you so damn sure the Mets aren't gonna trade him? So far, he hasn't really lived up to his hype; and he's pissing people off in the clubhouse.

As far as I can see, right now, anything can happen.

People are overreacting, not everyone with high potential start off as stars right away, people need patience and Milledge needs to humble himself

And everyone talks about him being a five tool player. At least when Reyes struggled early, we saw a few of those tools. We saw his base stealing and his defensive ability. With Milledge we've seen nothing. Like Reyes did, he has no idea what he is doing at the plate. But unlike Reyes, he's been terrible on the basepaths and he can't catch fly balls.

When Reyes first came up all we saw was a player that pulled a muscle every time he laid a fart. Reyes also made errors on routine ground balls. Additionally he was undisciplined at the plate. But the health problems seem to be gone; he has developed into an outstanding defensive shortstop and an offensive force. Please give LM at least as much patience as you did with Reyes. LM has shown flashes of power, an excellent throwing arm and he has great speed.

The last guy the Mets got rid of b/c some veterans did not like his attitude was Scott Kazmir. You guys ready to make the same mistake again.

For all we know the guy who wrote the note might be gone next year. In the meantime LM was protected by El Dugue and Franco. The front office knows he has the tools to be a super star otherwise he would have never been called up. They were hoping he could accelerate his development but it didn’t happen.

They may trade him but I doubt if they will be stupid enough to give him away.

But your comparing apples to organges. Reyes didn't have the attitude problems like Milledge has now.. And it's that attitude that will slow his growth on the field and in the club house.

You don’t know in what area his so called attitude problems are. According to Willie LM is a hard worker.
