Good amount to say so figured I'd just throw it all in one thread.

It's early and who knows how the team will work out. But general consensus is this team right now has 2 main holes at running back and nose tackle. I love the idea of building through the draft but to become a contender you also have to be able to go outside of the organization. The big name running back who's contract expires is Tiki Barber, but his age and the money he'll command doesn't make him a likely target. Ditto Ahman Green only even less desirable.

Michael Turner is an intriguing option and was my first choice in the trade market before Sprowles got hurt. He's a restricted free agent and depending what kind of qualifying offer the Chargers make I think he'd be the type of back to excel. The Schottenheimer-San Diego connection is also in play. Curtis Martin was a full time starter and 3 time 1,000 yard rusher by the time the Jets traded for him but I'm pretty sure it was the same situation with him being a restricted free agent and a trade J-Mac style was made. I'd seriously consider the lesser of our 2 second rounders for him assuming he stays healthy and is productive in his backup role to Tomilson.

The nose tackle department is predictably thin. Terdell Sands has the size at 6'7, 335 but if you're asking who the hell is Terdell Sands you in the majority. He's never got any playing time and most likely has shown nothing but an ability to block the sun but that's what you have to work with as far as potential free agents at the position. The best case scenario would be one of those big fat guys that always seem to get released for salary cap reasons like a Sam Adams for a year.

Alt of noise has been made about not having the personell to switch to a 3-4 mainly because of the lack of a true nose tackle, with most citing what it will do to Vilma. But the bottom line is the scheme really are not as different as the media makes it seem, and Vilma would have the same problem even in a 4-3. When guys like James Reed were next to Robertson, Vilma had the same problem of having to evade blockers. This isn't about having the wrong personell for the system, it's about having the wrong personel on the team. 3-4, 4-3, 46, Vilma is a playmaker and will excel in whatever system he's put in if surrounded by the right pieces.

I'm an optimist at heart and to be a Jet fan I think you almost have to be to put yourself through such torture year after year. But I think Bryan Thomas is going to be very good at the outside linebacker position. He's got the physical tools and that's mainly what the position entails. He's already been called a bust so any production at all is a bonus but I think he's going to have a solid year. With that said, Adalious Thomas of Baltimore is an impending free agent and with the Ravens switching to a 4-3 and already a host of young defensive ends, he could be the type of free agent acquisition that highlights an offseason.

Bottom line is this team has the capability to go .500 with a little luck and Pennington staying healthy. But if they're smart, they'll go the route the Giants did with Eli Manning and start Clemmens the last maybe 6 games of the season. Let the offensive line gel, have Pennington and Ramsey take a beating and then put Clemmens in a situation where it's all about getting experience. Then he comes in as the starter next year with ideally some confidence and the pieces around him to make a playoff run in 2007 with a serious Championship run in the years thereafter. It's rare that anything in the NFL goes according to plan but the team has the potential with this new front office and coaching staff to be competitve for a very long time. Which is all I think any of us could ask for at this point.

Tiki will end his career a Giant. And he's said that after this year, he won't play more than one more season. And if the G-men win it all this year, he's retiring. So that's what rules him out completely.

I'm sure he can rush the passer from there and have good-looking stats, but I think he'd suck in coverage. You don't just move a career d-lineman to DE and expect him to be able to cover TEs and RBs. And there'll be three other LBs, but there will always be those 1-on-1's at some point in games and they'd be exploited. And really, Vilma is the only real coverage (Eric Barton is OK at it) linebacker you have.

Rather than trading a late 2nd for Turner, you could just draft one. The Jets won't read this, but once the college season starts, I'll find you a good running back that you could get in the 2nd or later.

You guys brought in Grady Jackson yesterday and didn't sign him. So I think they're already going that free agent route. I don't know if Brenston Bucker visited just the Giants or if he's gonna stop by with the Jets as well.

With a little luck, the Jets could win 5 or 6 games. This team is awful. I think they're a couple seasons away from being good - with the right decisions.

I think Clemens will be so dependent on what's around him that I don't expect him to be really pay off until 2008, if all goes right. I like him and I think he could give you 3,400 yards/25 TD/12 INT type seasons, but he's gonna need that offensive line to good, a very good running game and a go-to 21st century tight end. Chris Baker ain't that. But I agree with the rest.
