Sterling's latest cheesy signature call

I had the pleasure of listening to an inning of Ma and Pa Yankees in the car, as well as part of the postgame. So I got to hear the replay of Sterling's call of Guiel's HR.

"It is high, it is far, it is gone! Aaron Guiel! Look at him smile!"

(big serious face)

Who is giving this guy his material, Kocur?

Now he's giving bit players who will be here for half a season signature HR calls and horrible ones at that. This guy is calling games for the New York Yankees, not some independent league team. He's become a cartoon of himself.

This guy spent a lot of time ripping Ma and Pa Yankees. The one thing he is wrong about in the portion I have read so far is that Sterling is condescending to Suzyn. She's there because Sterling loves her and he couldn't stand Kay/Steiner taking the middle three innings, as well as extra innings, of play-by-play from him. I'm so glad Steiner was the one to call Boone's walkoff HR. Not only was it a great call, but it probably infuriated Sterling. He would have ruined it with some cheesy line.

I love the part where the guy talks about Sterling overdoing the weather and attendance. It's so true.

Well yeah, the guy has obviously spent WAY too much time listening and critiquing Sterling, but most of his points are true. I maybe catch a few innings a week of Sterling and notice everything this guy said. Sterling is over the top. You can't say you wouldn't want more of a pro calling the game or even just a scaled back Sterling.

Agreed, I'm sick of the Sterling bashers!!! f*ck Waldman, but all in all she isn't even bad on radio, as long as I don't have to see that face! I don't get the Sterling bashers at all, the guy keeps it fun and yes, he is corny and a homer, but you know what, if you are listening to him you are a Yankee fan, I enjoy it! He is f*cking awesome!

I liked Sterling back in the day when there was just some of the schtick. It's gotten out of control the last few years and being teamed with Waldman makes him more painful. I liked when he was teamed with Kay. It broke things up for a few innings. Even Steiner, who can be cheesy himself, is a better play-by-play man fundamentally. I don't listen to all 162 games, so I don't need that extra BS. Give me a pro. I put Dodgers games on in the background to hear Vin Scully do the call.

I've gone through phases with Sterling. Do you remember when he first joined the Yankees? All he'd do is say they couldn't hit a lick and make fun of his partner, the Jay Bird, Jay Johnstone. Then he was pretty good with Kay. Now he's out of control. Ma and Pa Yankees is not an enjoyable listen if you're looking for play-by-play and solid analysis, which is what I want when I am driving, working, outside, or in the shower.

If you like him, that's fine, but I don't like the BS. He could be good. He's become a cartoon of himself.

His highpoint as an announcer was with Kay...no doubt -they complemented eachother superbly - and Kay was not the deushbag he is today.... people forget - Kay was an awesome , selfless radio guy....YES and ESPN went to his head and ruined him....
Agreed Sterling is too over the top these days - BUT I'd rather get a real PBP man on TV and get rid of Kay first....Get me a Costas - Gary Thorne ...Dave O'Brien etc....

Well that I agree with 100%. I used to love Kay. I loved his writing and I loved him on the radio with Sterling. I used to defend him the first season on YES because I thought he'd improve over time and let the game breathe a little. He's gotten worse. I also agree that I'd prefer a pro play-by-play guy on YES over the radio because I watch YES a lot more than I listen to the Lowe's Radio Booth.
