Farm report: Tabata earning rave reviews The biggest name in the Yankees farm system is righthander Phil Hughes, with good reason. Their 2004 first-round pick is currently riding a 22 2/3 scoreless innings streak for Double-A Trenton, and GM Brian Cashman is determined to keep him. But another prospect on nearly equal ground to Hughes in the Yankee offices is Jose Tabata, an 18-year-old Venezuelan outfielder whom they signed as an international free agent in 2004. Baseball America, in its midseason Top 100 prospect rankings released earlier this week, rated Tabata as 16th overall, five spots below Hughes. In 84 games for Class A Charleston this season entering last night, Tabata is hitting .303 (95-for-314) with 22 doubles, five home runs and 51 RBIs. And like Hughes, the Yankees don't plan to use him as a trade chip before the July 31 non-waiver deadline. Newsday No dought Tampa has reined in that cowboy cashman and knocked a little sense into him. ;) |

Next time he might want to do a little research. Glad to hear they don't want to trade Tabata. He was top 20 in all of baseball in the most recent prospect rankings. 16 if I'm not mistaken. |

Yeah, I said that to my dad when I was reading his Newsday at his house earlier today. I thought maybe he had a birthday. I meant to check. I was going to say, hey he's 18 now, Homie. You can legally bang him. |
