July 21, 2006 -- TORONTO - Alex Rodriguez laughed when a trade rumor that circulated through Wall Street yesterday was relayed to him.
"It doesn't make any difference," Rodriguez said of the rumor that had the Yankees third baseman going to the Phillies as part of a blockbuster trade for Bobby Abreu, Pat Burrell, Tom Gordon and David Bell, with the Yankees supposedly also sending Melky Cabrera and a player to be named. "I would veto it."

Though Rodriguez has become the Yankee Stadium boo birds' No. 1 target, the abuse hasn't come close to having him waive the blanket no-trade clause in his contract.

A Phillies official laughed at the rumor.

Rodriguez said his bruised left big toe was feeling better and he expected to play all four games against the Blue Jays on the artificial turf at Rogers Centre.

Yeah, he's likely to accept a deal to another city right down the road known for booing, a city that booed their own, Hall of Famer Mike Schmidt, not to mention Santa Claus. The rumor is even dumber because it includes Melky. The Yankees would be giving them arguably the most talented all around player in baseball at $16 million/yr since Texas pays the other $9M/yr, the Yankees would be taking ALL of their bad contracts, and have to give up a switch hitter who is about to turn 22 and could perform on the big stage on top of that? Ridicurous. It makes no sense for the Yankees, no sense for A-Rod, and allows Gillick to get a great player, clear all of his bad deals, and sets his infield for the next five years with A-Rod, Rollins, Utley, and Howard. Where do these dumb rumors come from?

Unconfirmed Report: Red Sox Trade Big Papi
According to my shrink (I had a quick emergency session with him after I read the previous post), the Boston Red Sox have reached an agreement with the New York Yankees to send popular slugger, David Ortiz, to the Bombers for cash ($

Kind of like the Ted Williams-Joe DiMaggio deal that almost went down over drinks.

The proposed trade was for cash ($15,000,000). John Henry intends to use the money to finance a production of Cats in Providence.
