Oh, if it was a day game, then maybe he went after the game, and there is an issue.

That's a very weird start time, right? Was it Patriots Day on Staten Island today?

Hopefully it's just triceps soreness after a few appearances the past few days, although Pavano had triceps soreness when he was about to get back and it turned out to be a bone spur above his elbow that needed to be removed. Lets just hope Dr. Andrews' name really doesn't come up.

Not to let you people up in my business (and don't ask me for details, cuz I'm not even willing to tell most of you my name), but I cover the SI Yankees. I wasn't gonna blab, but I felt I had to throw this in because of this thread.

I don't know if the 11:00 start was because of or if the camps took advantage, but damn near half the seats were filled with kids from various summer camps. They got free tickets.

Dotel came in in the 7th inning, relieving George Kontos and looked OK. He gave up a bloop single and then a linedrive double to Francis Poni. After that, he struck out the next batter and got a 1-5 DP. Jammed the sh*t outta the guy - shattered bat - and got a bloop to the mound. Caught it and threw to third to nail Picart who had taken off on the swing.

Most of his fastballs were 91 and he topped out at 93 (hit that twice). That's based on stadium pitch speed and the gun the pitching coach was using. Dotel said that the velocity is fine for where he is now. He thinks that his arm strength will improve and believes that the extra couple mph comes from adrenaline and he'll get that back when he returns to the big leagues.

After the game he had ice over his elbow/triceps area and spent about 30 minutes in the trainers room. But when he came out he aid that he felt fine. Said that he's pleased with the progress but won't get too excited unless the arm feels good tomorrow. He said that if he's OK tomorrow, he'll be back with the Yanks by next week. He said this to me around 1:30. By the time I get home, go to sleep (f*cking early start time) and wake up, I'm reading on here that he's seeing the doctor. :no1:

They better trade for Papelbon to setup or something.

Time to seriously get a new medical staff. They have no clue how to rehab these players. I just wish the season would end now.

Nice gig. That should certainly help the resume. Thanks for the report too.

That would be about as unprofessional as he could be, so I hope not.

Umm yeah, he had something called Tommy John Surgery. It's not exactly easy to comeback from it quickly with no setbacks.

No, I don't think I'm supposed to. Don't know if I'm allowed. My journalism professors always say you're supposed to be an objective observer so I don't want to come off like a fan. I'm cool with most of the players but I haven't even let them know that I root for them. When I was leaving I shook his hand and called him "my nigga" - and to that, he smiled and said "Buenos tardes" - but I didn't wanna ask him to sign anything. If Phillip Huges gets sent down though, I'd be real tempted.

btw - For you people who care about prospects, I had talked to a scout about a month ago and he said that Tabata is the goods. Said he thinks he's gonna be like Beltran but hit for better average and what most impressed him is that he's got a man's body already. He thinks he's as close to can't-miss as can be and is a better pro prospect than Hughes. And this was before that linedrive off his bat nearly killed Phil in the Futures Game.

Don't forget who was the first one on Tabata's jock :peace:

Seriously though thats a pretty sweet job. You get to talk baseball with scouts, players, and press, nobody better to talk baseball with. Do you know how the organization feels about Mitch Hilligoss(however its spelled)? I know they're trying to find a position for him, but he seems like a real solid, polished hitter. Good #2 type. Also if you could set up a race between me and the next really fast cat they get I'd appreciate it

I liked that part too. I could see strider having a real proffesional like sit down interview with a player and then saying "aaight ma nigga, be cool, I'll holla at you later" or something to that nature. He keeps it real like that :agent:

No. He's a real jovial guy and it's a loose clubhouse (he did the interview wearing nothing but boxer briefs) so I felt I could slip it in, just to see his reaction. I said, "Aight, good luck, my nigga."

Interviews or just talked to? I've talked to pretty much all of them. I'm in the locker room before and after games (yes, I've seen them naked) and most of them are cool and around our age so you make casual conversation and I get them for quotes.

Yeah, it is. But it's pretty quiet in SI. The real action is at Keyspan when they play the Cyclones. You'll see a lot more media and the press room is packed.

It's exactly what you said about Hilligoss. He can hit (he was down to like .250 a few weeks ago and he's up around .320 right now) but he doesn't have a real position. Pitts keeps moving him from SS to 3B and has a rotation of infielders going. Raley's hitting like .370 and has experienec at 2B and SS but he won't start him consistently.

Funny thing about Hilligoss. First time I go in the locker room, I'm waiting for Tim O'Brien to come out of the shower for an interview. Hilligoss steps out naked, using the towel to dry his hair (yeah) and he sees me. I looked at him for a couple seconds wondering why he didn't use the towel to cover himself and our eyes met when when he pulled the towel away. He saw me see him naked and the looks on his face were this exactly: :wtf:  He got dressed real quick.

I think the most impressive guys there are the pitchers. Nick Peterson (closer) is the man. He's done well and he's one of those people that you can't help but like. Great personality. Paul Patterson got called up to Charleston today (I was trying to talk to Pitts when he got the call). George Kontos has good stuff and Norton told me that when his arm is a full strength he can get it up to 95.

Hilligoss is probably the best hitter but I think he's got too much of an uppercut swing for a doubles hitter. He's had success but I'm trying to project. I like Wilkins De la Rosa. His average is low but he's kind of a got a Soriano thing where everything he makes contact with gets stung. "The ball jumps off his bat" and he's got speed. He's the fastest on the team but I think you could beat him. Nobody on the roster has that blazing "he could steal 40 in the big leagues" speed. Raley I like as second baseman. He's got nice range and has scooped a lot of tough hops. I don't know why they're f*cking with his playing time.

Jon Poterson, former first round pick, is hitting under .100 and riding the bench. I haven't talked to him (not interview or chit-chat), but I've been told that he's got an "It's not a big deal. I'm just here to have fun" attitude and actually said something close to that. I saw on a website earlier today that he got $900,000+ on the signing bonus, so I guess...

Strider, I'd just be careful who you say it around. You were apparently correct that Dotel wouldn't mind, but you could end your career before it really takes off if you say that around the wrong person. I guess you gotta do what you gotta do though.

Do you go on all the road trips or just to Brooklyn?

Homie, I didn't like it. I think it's nuts to have a cool opportunity like covering a Yankee minor league affiliate and to say something like that, joking or not. It's not like it's player to player. It's media to player.

No, just Brooklyn.

I have a good feel for reading people. I usually know when to switch formal/colloquial and who I can say what to. Talking to the players, including him, I realize that writers probably cut out a lot of what is said because it's informal and there's cussing. I've dealt with a lot of Dominicans and talking with him for about 10 minutes, he seemed like "the type." Not in a negative way (he was nice), but the type of guy who says that type of sh*t himself. I wouldn't do it around Pitts.
