Jets go deep for Ramsey
BY RICH CIMINI
DAILY NEWS SPORTS WRITER
Tuesday, July 11th, 2006

Adding some stability to their long-term quarterback situation, the Jets quietly extended the contract of newcomer Patrick Ramsey, who will compete with Chad Pennington for the starting job in training camp.

Ramsey, acquired in a March trade with the Redskins, was due to become an unrestricted free agent after the upcoming season, but he received a one-year, $2.1 million extension through 2007.

That includes a $1.4 million roster bonus, payable in March - the same time Pennington is due a $2 million roster bonus. It's unlikely that both quarterbacks will be back in 2007, especially if rookie Kellen Clemens shows promise, setting the stage for a Pennington-or-Ramsey decision next offseason.

In exchange for postponing his free-agent year, Ramsey got a small guarantee from the Jets, receiving $250,000 of his nonguaranteed base salary for this season ($1.7 million) in the form of a roster bonus that was paid June 30.

It's possible that Ramsey, who arrived from the Redskins with only one year left on his first NFL contract, was concerned about making the team after a somewhat disappointing performance in last month's minicamp.

The Jets have one of the most unstable quarterback situations in the league, with Pennington trying to rebound from his second shoulder surgery and Ramsey attempting to restart his career after a disappointing run in Washington. Backup Brooks Bollinger, hardly a lock to make the team, will be an unrestricted free agent after the season.

Meanwhile, the Jets have begun preliminary talks with their top pick, left tackle D'Brickashaw Ferguson, the fourth player taken in the draft.
