Pennington's just 1 in 4

First glimpse at Jet QB race

BY RICH CIMINI
DAILY NEWS SPORTS WRITER

Chad Pennington throws yesterday at Jets minicamp, where he is part of 4-man quarterback competition.

The ever-secretive Eric Mangini must have felt as if strangers were rummaging through his desk drawers yesterday at Hofstra. By league rule, the Jets were required to open their three-day minicamp to the media, offering the first real glimpse of the reconstructed team and - drumroll, please - Chad Pennington in action.
After watching Pennington and his twice-repaired throwing shoulder for two practices, three things became abundantly clear about him and the Jets' quarterback situation:

Mangini wasn't kidding when he called it an open competition. Perhaps trying to convey that very message, he let rookie Kellen Clemens, a second-round pick, run the first-team offense for the entire morning practice. In the afternoon, Pennington worked with the starters, continuing what Mangini described as an equal-opportunity rotation.

Pennington, who resumed throwing in March and has participated in all 12 offseason practices, is being handled with kid gloves. In the team drills, he took the same amount of reps as the other three quarterbacks, but he was held out of certain individual passing sessions. He's working on a pitch count, although this was his first double session since the injury.

In terms of pure arm strength, Pennington rates behind Patrick Ramsey and Clemens. Perhaps by design, Pennington was limited to mostly short, safe passes.
He appeared tentative on some throws, although he did uncork a 45-yard completion to Laveranues Coles and he threw downfield more often in the afternoon.

"I know you guys want to see long balls, but my goal is not to come out here and prove that I can throw the long ball," said Pennington, who seemed reasonably encouraged by his progress.

Pennington bristled when a TV reporter asked if felt there was any significance to him working behind Clemens in the morning.

"I knew you guys would say that," said Pennington, telling the reporter, "Good for you. Maybe you can create a story." This is the first time since 2002 that he isn't the undisputed starter.

The four quarterbacks, including Brooks Bollinger, have split time with the first team in spring drills, according to Mangini. Still, it seemed curious that Clemens got the first nod on Day 1, which attracted dozens of media types.

"You should not read into it one bit," Mangini said. "It's just part of the rotation. I didn't script the rotation because (the media) are here today. It just fell that way."

Mangini said he has no plans to name the starter before training camp, setting the stage for Pennington vs. Ramsey, whom they acquired from the Redskins. Clemens, who has a quick release but appeared indecisive on some plays, is held in high regard and could see playing time as a rookie.

Toning down his recent bravado, Pennington said his goal is to be healthy by the start of camp in six weeks.

"Am I where I want to be? Absolutely not," he said. "My goal is to come back strong for training camp."

I for one am not gonna miss the headless chickens, kool-aid comments...Mangini loves to answer without giving an answer :DIt's different and I like it...

Well, coming from you I could see that. You optimist!! :peace:

I really do hope he can be our week 1 starter, but it's still not looking 100% good, so we'll see.
