Jean-Jacques Taylor: Henson project could be sacked

Drew Henson's days in Dallas are numbered. That might be a good thing.

During last week's minicamp, coach Bill Parcells said he wasn't that impressed with Henson's performance in NFL Europe. Tony Romo has clearly passed Henson on the depth chart, and as long as Parcells is the head coach – of course that might only be for one more season – then Henson isn't going to move on the depth chart.

Parcells, a bottom-line kind of guy, didn't talk about the numerous dropped passes Henson had in NFL Europe. And he didn't mention how injuries essentially robbed the former Michigan star of his top four weapons – none passed their year-end physicals, according to Henson.

None of that bodes well for Henson in terms of his tenure with the Cowboys.

The Cowboys like his game management and his arm, but the NFL is about decision-making, and they seem to think he doesn't do it well enough.

It's not that he throws a lot of interceptions. It's that he stares down receivers and doesn't process information quickly enough to consistently make the best read based on the play selection and the defensive coverage.

That's not to say he wouldn't succeed in another scheme – he might – but time appears to be running out in Dallas, where Drew Bledsoe is probably going to be the quarterback for the next two seasons.

Henson can't afford to spend another two years on the bench. He needs to go to a team that believes in his future – and will give him a legitimate opportunity to compete for playing time.

Parcells already has made up his mind.

Who dat? He dropped to the 6th round for the Texans and I don't remember there being other suitors when Dallas traded for him.

Henson was a project-project. He's the equivalent of NBA teams drafting these 18-year-old bench riders from Europen teams. Guys like Yaroslav Korolev, Pavel Podkolzin, Aleksandar Pavlovic and Nikoloz Tskitishvili who are young and didn't even start in Europe. Darko averaged like 6 points/game in Serbia (or wherever the f*ck he came from) because he was 17 and playing on a pro team. And you know what happens with them dudes? They suck for years and people forget about them cuz they suck quietly. They suck in practice and summer league and pre-season so they don't even get a chance to suck in real games.

That's Drew Henson. He didn't even play much in college (he was behind Tom Brady until 2000) and in three seasons threw a total of 24 touchdowns, 2,900 yards and completed just 57 percent of his passes. That before stealing Steinbrenner's money. Oh, but he's got a good arm. And...and, he put 4 TDs on Northwestern. I'm looking over it - that offense, not including Henson, had 9 future NFL players on it. Ten, if you count John Navarre, his backup. And three of them were offensive linemen, two of whom have gone to the Pro Bowl (Maurice Williams and Steve Hutchinson). Didn't that mo'f*cker have trouble in spring training with throwing errors?

If I'm a Cowboys fan, this doesn't even matter. Bledsoe is your man for at least next season (and I think he'll be there another 2 years) and you can find somebody to groom. Free agency and the 2007 draft looks to be deep at QB.

Henson actually split time in games with Brady the season before Brady left. I was at the game against Syracuse and they were basically alternating drives. At the time I thought I'd be able to be one of the rare people who saw Henson score a TD and hit a HR in person. Of course I never got to see the HR. If Henson hadn't given up his senior season to play for the Yankees full-time, he would have gone in the first round, probably the first pick to Houston.

That'd be great if he's there another 2 years.

I know. And his numbers in the plattoon weren't impressive. He's part of the reason Brady went in the 6th round. He only threw 16 touchdowns in his last season because of the time split.

From the perspective of a Giants fan? I disagree. They can't do better than him right now and whoever they draft will be wet-behind-the-ears. I know he's a statue and we have more pass rushers than anyone can count (thanks Ernie) but he can pick defenses apart. He's gotten sacked a lot in his career but he's been durable. And except for RT (cuz Fabini sucks) and LG (no Larry Allen), their offensive line is solid when healthy. They've got some cap room too so I expect them to address those positions before 2007.

Ahh.

No team is gonna go hard for him or give him a chance to start though. Every team that doesn't already have a good quarterback has a young one they either believe in or have so much invested in that they've got no choice but to hope. Maybe the Lions, but they signed Kitna and McCown. And maybe the Vikings, but they drafted Tarvaris Jackson 2nd round.

Unlikely Parcells will be around longer than Bledsoe anyway and a new coach more than likely would've went in a new direction anyway. Does Parcells in his contract have a deal where he becomes a consultant after he retires from coaching? My gut feeling would be if he does after losing the NFC Championship game this year he retires then tries to move up and draft a franchise type QB.

Hey, lets give the Jerry Jones Bill P relationship a HUGE thumbs up -JJ has given the man everything you could want -a Huge Contract - free run of the club, and money to spend - Jones is a tremendous owner who wants to win. And the Parcells will leave thing is getting old - he's already stayed longer than most said he would.

True, but you have to wonder about the TO thing. Everything that's been reported has said this was a Jerry Jones deal. I'm sure Parcells gave his blessing and is excited to get the on the field player, but the idea of coaching him for very long can't be the most appealing thing in the world. My money is him being a model citizen his first year but the media attention still has to be a handful.

I think this will be his last year as the head coach. Cowboys are poised to make a big run this year, but they're a team that is going in two directions. They have a ton of young talented defenders and some on offense but also have Bledsoe who's taken alot of hits in his career as well as starting a 31 and 32 year old at receiver and some age on both sides of the line. I think they win the division this year but I think Carolina represents the NFC in the Super Bowl
