Yankees shut down Sheffield
05/31/2006 2:49 AM ET
By Mark Feinsand / MLB.com

DETROIT -- Gary Sheffield's return to the lineup may prove to be little more than a tease for the Yankees, as the right fielder may be headed back to the disabled list with a wrist injury.

Sheffield was scratched from the Yankees' lineup less than an hour before the start of Tuesday's game, as the team announced he had a sore left wrist.

After the game, Sheffield expressed concern that the injury -- which he said is in a different spot than the one that kept him sidelined for more than two weeks this month -- might send him back to the disabled list.

"I don't know what's going on," Sheffield said. "I felt like it was getting better, but it's in a different spot now. It's right on the wrist, right on the bone. It's really painful.

"I'm trying to get back, especially with [Hideki] Matsui down, and do what I'm accustomed to doing," he added. "When you're not able to do that, it's frustrating."

Sheffield said that his current ailment is on the bone on the outside of his wrist, where the bruise that sent him to the DL earlier this month was on the inside of his wrist.

why not! I'm beggining to like the infusion of these younger guys, Cano, Melky and Wang, the team has some buzz, and having some speed wouldnt hurt. I'd give it a shot.

I think it is a new contract that he needs.... :agent:

Write it down now......Sheff will not be a contributor to this team this year.

My beef was with Bubba, not Melky :peace:

I could live with a faster, less polished Jeff Davannon type. If he plays well he could play himself into a trade.

You guys know the definition of the word "indefinitely"?

When your balls are slapping up against a chick's ass, you're in definitely.

It's time to sh*t or get off the pot with Thompson anyway. The guy is 26 years old. Give him at least a few weeks of regular playing time, and let's see what we've got.

The farm system has been on a bit of a roll over the last year: Cano, Wang, and Melky (so far). Maybe Thompson is the next one?
