Yankees News for April 6 --------------------- Click here for links to full articles http://www.baseballfans.net/yankees/articl...060406065035563 --------------------- Behind the 8th ball April 6 Newsday: Everything came so easily to the Yankees on Opening Night, it's almost as if they were forced to spend the last two nights making up for it. For the second straight night the Athletics looked like a group of veterans, coming through with big plays late, while the Yankees were essentially stepping over each other. If Robinson Cano's eighth-inning fielding error was the turning point, then Frank Thomas' double off Kyle Farnsworth off the leftfield wall was the exclamation point. As Oakland celebrated their 9-4 win, the Yankees were left flabbergasted, trying to figure out how they allowed the Athletics score nine unanswered runs rather easily. And the Yankees have a day off in Anaheim today to figure out how to transform themselves back. Jaret Wright, pitching in relief of Chien-Ming Wang, took the loss. He pitched well for two innings, but he stumbled in his third, giving up a leadoff double to Milton Bradley in the eighth, a shot that just barely went over the glove of a leaping Johnny Damon in centerfield. With the infield drawn in, Wright induced Jay Payton to hit a grounder right at Cano, but the Yankees' second-year second baseman appeared to pick his head up to check on Bradley at third just before the ball entered his glove, which turned out to be a very costly decision. The ball bounced away, Bradley scored and everything went bad from there. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Wait! It's Too Early To Hit Panic Button April 6 New York Post: Yes, yes, yes, it's early. All around New York this morning, that's what people are telling themselves, an expanded group therapy session that brings both baseball precincts into account. Early in the night, the Mets had a 4-0 lead, saw it vanish into a 4-4 tie, then watched it all immolate in an unsightly 9-5 mess to the Nationals. A few hours later, the Yankees had a 4-0 lead, saw it disappear into a 4-4 tie, then watched it implode into an unseemly 9-4 cluster to the A's. Agita everywhere you turn this morning in New York: in Queens, in the Bronx, and everywhere else. "It's early," you say, and you're right about that, it is early. But the Yankees have now played three games, and they've had a chance to win all three of them. The only one they won was the one where they scored two touchdowns and a two-point conversion. It's three games. It's a small sample. It's impossible to declare that the Yankees only know how to win games with mercy-rule-type leads. It's impossible to declare anything just yet. But it's not too early to watch, and wonder, and worry, even if it's a slight, imperceptible worry. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Good news regarding Pavano April 6 Newsday: The Yankees heard back from Dr. Robert Watkins yesterday and the news regarding Carl Pavano wasn't as bad as the team may have feared. Watkins, a Los Angeles-based back specialist, did not see anything on the MRI of Pavano's left buttock that was a "problem," general manager Brian Cashman said. Watkins recommended that Pavano continue to perform the physical therapy drills meant to develop his back strength, and he could restart his rehab as soon as he feels fit. Pavano, in turn, threw off flat ground yesterday in Tampa, marking the first time he has thrown since he felt some pain in his left buttock while pitching a week ago today. "As of yesterday Carl felt he was 70 percent better from Friday," Cashman said. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Leiter joins YES lineup April 6 Newsday: The YES Network yesterday officially added recently retired pitcher Al Leiter to its stable of analysts, saying he will work 50-60 Yankees games this season. Leiter earned positive reviews for his part-time work on Fox during his playing days. He said he drew the interest of both Fox and ESPN, but YES acted to sign him. Primarily, Leiter will be a game analyst, but he will debut Tuesday as a pre- and postgame studio host for the home opener against the Royals. Leiter, 40, retired March 19 after a brief appearance for the Yankees in a spring training game. He said watching Opening Day on TV "was strange, and a bit somber." John Filippelli, YES' president of production and programming, said he is not concerned about how many analysts his crowded roster has, saying, "I'm a believer in ensemble casts." Because of YES' new batting practice show there is more need for studio analysts. With Bobby Murcer and David Justice doing more studio work and Jim Kaat cutting back on games, Filippelli said there would be plenty of room for Leiter. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Yanks' Errors Prove Costly in Loss to A's April 6 New York Times: For the New York fans who stayed up to watch the Yankees game on Wednesday, it must have looked like a late-night slasher film. This was grisly. An early four-run lead evaporated at the Coliseum on Wednesday as the Yankees made two pivotal errors in a 9-4 loss to the Oakland Athletics. Six of the A’s runs were unearned. Suddenly, that opening-night blowout seems like a distant memory. “You certainly can’t expect to win when you give them extra outs,” Yankees Manager Joe Torre said. “Errors are part of the game. You just hope when you make errors, they don’t come back to bite you. Tonight, we didn’t make them at good times.” After winning by 13 runs on Monday, the Yankees have lost two games in a row, both in the late innings. Now, they head to Anaheim to play the Angels, who eliminated them from the playoffs last fall. An error by Derek Jeter led to two unearned runs in the fourth inning on Wednesday, and the game was tied, 4-4, in the eighth. Jaret Wright had worked two scoreless innings, but Milton Bradley opened the eighth with a triple over Johnny Damon’s head and off the center field wall. “I just couldn’t get back fast enough,” Damon said. “It just beat me. I couldn’t get as high as I wanted to.” It got uglier very quickly. With the infield in, second baseman Robinson Cano booted Jay Payton’s grounder, bringing in Bradley with the go-ahead run. Two singles brought in another run to make it 6-4. Mike Myers came in for a strikeout, but Kyle Farnsworth’s first pitch was wild, advancing the runners to second and third. Farnsworth walked Mark Ellis, and after a pop out, he surrendered a three-run double off the left field wall to Frank Thomas. That made it 9-4, and Ron Villone, the fourth pitcher of the inning and sixth of the game for the Yankees, finally got a ground ball to end the inning. Cano said he was concentrating on Bradley at third base when he failed to pick Payton’s grounder. “I took my eye off the ball trying to see where the runner was at,” Cano said. “I made a mistake. Nothing I can do about it. If I don’t make a mistake, it’s a different story.” -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------- Click here for links to full articles http://www.baseballfans.net/yankees/articl...060406065035563 --------------------- |
