These are the clubs that kill us - Great pitching - pesky hitters, good contact hitters All of which are young and under 30 except Frank Thomas ....Don't be surprised if they're in the Series. The outfield isn't great - BUT it's excellent defense wise.
THEY ARE THE ANTI YANKEES....

Harden
Haren
Zito
Kennedy

Street

NSwisher
BCrosby
Chavez
Ellis
Scutaro

Payton
Kotsay
Bradley

I don't know if i'd call them a good contact hitting team. They are built kinda similar to us offensively. Beane likes guys that walk and hit extra base hits. I think the best case cenerio for them would be Thomas staying healthy and DHing with Johnson at 1B and Swisher in the OF...that way Payton could be a 4th OFer. Their starting 5 is really good and I like their pen. Good team overall, but still behind the Angels I think.

Don't see them having enough offense. Solid team but other than Chavez and Bradley no one really scares me. Thomas doesn't worry me any more than Sammy Sosa does. This isn't '98 any more. Their pitching staff is very good and in a contract year I think Zito rebounds but they're also very young. You look at the ChiSox rotation last year and while they're young they were all experienced. I know they're the trendy pick this year but push came to shove if I had to say who our biggest threat in the AL would be I'd still say Chicago.

I think Chavez, Bradley, Swisher, and even Kotsay will be good on both sides of the ball. Johnson will be ok. Thomas, WAY better than Sammy btw, probably won't be healthy. Crosby and Kendal are pretty overrated IMO. Zito, Harden, Haren, Blanton, Loaiza/Kennedy is a VERY good rotation. Street, Calero, Witasick, Saarloos, Halsey, Kennedy/Loaiza is a pretty decent pen. If they lack anything its dept and chips(when compaired to the Angels). I think they will be right there with the Sox and Indians in the WC race the whole year and wouldn't be shocked at all if they got in.

Lots have people have picked them. They're the flavor of the year just like the Angels and Astros were last year.

Ya know. I never really pondered the extent of the depth of their team, but it is pretty freaking solid, the As that is. Harden has the best stuff in the American League bar none. Haren reminds me slightly of Halladay, although different pitchers, Zito is going to be at least good, maybe great, Blanton had a rookie year loaded with quality starts, and you know they'll get buy with Loaiza or Kennedy in the 5th spot. Duscherer and Street as the 1-2 in the pen, can't really argue with that. Their defense is solid, especially left side of the infield with Crosby and Chavez. Guys like Kotsay, Swisher, and Kendall, blue-collar hard-nosed players. I know Kendall ain't great, but his style of play is something you wish you saw out of everyone. Guys like Milton Bradley with all the tools out in the field. They are pretty formidable with the right breaks.

The key to that team is going to be all that upside offensively finally performing or at least performing like near its upside. Chavez has been due for a monster breakout for years and he's still of the age that his best is yet to come, Bobby Crosby is a major overall talent at SS. Those two combine for probably the best range of any SS, 3B combo, both with 30 HR promise. They are the two keys. Both need to be healthy and produce like capable, and Chavez has to take that extra step. I'm a big Nick Swisher guy. He doesn't need to become what he will be, but he needs to improve. Guys like Jason Kendall, Mark Kotsay, Milton Bradley, Jay Payton, Mark Ellis, Dan Johnson, and Frank Thomas are nice part players. My opinion, they could have really used Luis Castillo though. Give the upper part of the lineup a kick. But I do think they'll be fun to watch. A good collection with some breaks could be very formidable.

Thinking about this, does anyone else find the Anaheim Angels real boring? I thought this for awhile. They really are a boring winner. They've had Vlad and that's it. No sizzle to them. Garret Anderson has been a decent cleanup hitter at best since his back injury. A guy like Chone Figgins isn't even that exciting for his type of player. For awhile they had the lowest slugging 1B I can think of and best defensive CF perhaps in the league in Darin Erstad. No real pop out of the DH. Their pitchers are solid, but they aren't flashy. Even Bartolo, he doesn't blow you away, he just darts the corners and induces grounders and flyouts. Perhaps I'm overthinking though just for the excitement of talking baseball with the season started. They have a lot of young talent though this year with McPherson, Kotchman, Santana and Mathis starting and Erstad back in CF, so we'll see.

I'm not possitive, but I don't think McPherson made the team. What I like about the Angels is that on top of having a good all around team with a good bench, they have guys like Kendrick, Morales, Weaver (Jared), McPherson, Wood, and Ayabar that can either be traded for anything they want or step in themselves. Izturis, Rivera, Mathis, Kotchman, and others still have lots of value if they need to be traded; I mean they can literally make just about any trade. They just seem extreemly well rounded and deep to me.

IMO the A's have the best starters in the AL - that's why they are loaded...All 4 can dominate - we have 1 pitcher who "may" dominate - RJ...may ....

Which only furthers my point about Chicago being the team to beat. Combine that with solid defense everywhere and a middle of the lineup of Thome, Konerko and Dye and you've got a team that won the World Series and improved.

Chicago is the team to beat, but I like the upside of the As staff a little more particularly because of what Harden and Haren are capable. I'd like them more as a 1-2 than any combo the White Sox could throw out there. Plus, I like Zito better than Buerhle
