Notes: Wright encouraged by outing
03/30/2006 8:31 PM ET
By Mark Feinsand / MLB.com

TAMPA, Fla. -- Jaret Wright threw 4 1/3 innings of one-run ball in a Minor League game on Thursday, seeing his first game action since suffering back spasms on March 19.

Wright threw 69 pitches, allowing four hits and striking out four batters without issuing a walk. He said his back felt fine, putting him on track to be with the team for Opening Day.

"The way it was coming out of my hand felt good, and the velocity was there," he said. "I got everything I was looking for out of today."

"He felt good today," manager Joe Torre said. "He was throwing pretty hard, had a good breaking ball and seemed to be in a good frame of mind."

What Wright's role will be, however, remains to be seen. The right-hander appears to be on the outside of the rotation looking in, with Chien-Ming Wang and Shawn Chacon having all but locked up the third and fourth spots behind Randy Johnson and Mike Mussina.

The Yankees will use a four-man rotation during the first two weeks of the season, likely pushing Wright into a long-relief role.

"You'd like to do what you've done in the past," Wright said, "but when it comes down to it, to me, it's about playing."

Hopefully this guy is correct.

Like I said in another thread, I wouldn't be overly concerned about this, since Wang or Chacon could do solid work out of the pen

This guy has no business being in the starting rotation of any MLB team let alone the New York Yankees. It's sickening this is even an issue.

Pavano is a problem too. If we had just done the right thing and signed Pedro, every thing would be good.

Who knows with Torre. Remember how Torre last year had Brown start the year in the rotation (for the first few weeks of the season before they needed a 5th starter) and Wright in the pen after Wright had a great spring.

SHADDUP!! You don't put better starters in the pen just to strengthen it while weakening the rotation.

What use will Wang or Chacon be in the pen if we're down 6-2 after 3 innings every time Wright starts?

Just putting positive spin on a worst case scenario. We got Sturtze and Proctor in the pen for Christ's sakes, and as it stands, they will pitch in close games. Not to mention the fear of Myers facing righties.

You could put a positive spin on this if it was Wang and Chacon battling for a final spot. However, any equation that lands Wright in the rotation and one of these guys in the pen is not positive. Wright has no business in the pen in my opinion let alone the rotation.

Don't get me wrong, I'm in no way endorsing or encouraging Wright to start over Chacon or Wang. But considering we have crap in the pen right now, I wouldn't have been overly hurt.

If you think about it.

Cold weather
4 man april rotation
The weakness of our pen other than Rivera and maybe Farnsworth
the relative fragility of our starting 5 to begin with.

Until a 5th starter is needed that pitcher may actually be more usefull in the pen.

To clarify I dont want Wright starting over either Wang or Chacon, I was just playing Devil's Advocate.

Exactly, Homie. Although if Wright pitches like he did last year, he guarantees a loss 25% of the time when we use only 4.

I certainly agree with you that the pen is crap. We need Dotel to get ready as soon as possible and when he is ready we need him to be lights out. Having Sturtze and Proctor coming in late in close games is a sickening thought.
