Scott Proctor came to camp last month as the odd man out, staring another Minor League option in the face -- not to mention a pitching staff which included 12 veterans with guaranteed big-league contracts.

Six games later, Proctor has made such an impression on Torre and the Yankees that he has earned a spot on the Opening Day roster.

Proctor received the good news on Tuesday night before his start against the Phillies, in which he allowed one run on three hits over five innings. In six games (two starts), Proctor is 1-1 with a 1.06 ERA, allowing two runs on seven hits and seven walks, striking out 14 in 17 innings.

Proctor will temporarily assume the long-relief role that Aaron Small will fill eventually, as Small will open the season on the DL along with Carl Pavano.

"He did that on his own, because we didn't have to take him as the pitcher with the two guys on the DL," Torre said. "With the way he's pitched, he's made a spot for himself."
I know I've been saying(smugly) that there was zero chance we'd have to worry about Proctor being on the 25 man, but in my defense there were many circumstances that lead to this. Small getting hurt, Pavano getting hurt, and Proctor pitching really good. I'll be honest, as much crap as I've talked about Proctor he looked good in that game against the Phillies. He was locating well and getting swings on that low sinking slider that i've never seen before(what was that about anyway? he has a slider?). His curve is still doodoo, i don't care what anybody says, and his fastball doesn't have the movement to make hitters uncomfortable, but he was effective. Right now I trust him more than Sturtze, Maybe even more than Wright.

Anyway between Proctor being on the 25 man and Bernie looking like he'll get plenty of ABs between DH and...ugh...Right Field I was off on two things I was pretty sure of during the off season. My bad.

I never trusted Sturtze. The guy has always been a bad pitcher. His ERA wasnt very bad last year because he was amazing for one month.

Decent Spring Training and he makes the team. Can't say I'm surprised. I do have to say at this point though that between him and Sturtze it's really a toss up as to who I trust more. Every once in a blue moon either one can have a good game, or get a couple big outs, then the next thing you know they're walking the ball park and serving up bombs. I can't say I'm happy about this, but I'm not shocked either.

I'll believe Proctor looks good when I see it. I don't take this as good news, and at least nobody else does.
