I met Sports Illustrated baseball writer Melissa Segura today. She, along with some other writers/editors, did a thing at my school today for aspiring magazine writers. I heard SI was involved so I went. After it was over, Strider being the eager beaver, approached her and asked her real questions. Not stuff like, "Is it hard for a woman to make it in that business", but Strider-type questions like, "Who's an a-hole and have any Yankees tried to hit on you?" This was after having a little coversation. You can't get at a person like that but after realizing she was cool and a "real" person, I got "real" too. Few things (I'll leave out the journalism advice because it's irrelevant here): - Jeter is the worst person to talk to. He's extremely boring and she doesn't think he's even putting on a media-savvy act; she thinks he's genuinely vanilla. - Soriano was up & down in his moods. He'd be real engaging and other days, he'd be a jerk. - The Yankees that have been nicest to her are A-Rod and Mariano. Bernie is standoffish but was nice after A-Rod let him know that she's cool. - Said that some of them (wouldn't name names) try to spray female reporters with champagne during celebrations and make it a wet t-shirt contest. - The majority of athletes are a-holes but Tom Gordon is the sweetest pro athlete she's ever dealt with. - Tom Verducci is a god. He's like a mentor and although he's very dull, he's a good person and has taught her a lot. - Vlad Guerrero doesn't talk much because he isn't smart. He's from a rural area in D.R., got a 4th grade education and doesn't even speak proper Spanish. He knows it and is very self conscious so he avoids talking as much as possible. But he's got a nice voice (a singer's voice) and is a nice person. - Giambi's got a little pee-pee. She didn't say it - I did (long story how it got to that) and her reacton let me know it's true. |

"Most athletes are a-holes." That doesn't surprise me at all, highest level I've covered is college and some are complete jerks and they aint even getting paid yet. Some of the guys are cool, others are real arrogant a-holes, but they're usually the guys who get the job done. I've always looked at it like this... If I'm starting a baseball team, give me 25 scumbags and put them up against 25 nice guys and my team will win EVERY time. The Yankees need to look in to that theory. |

She looked OK (was showing cleavage) and no, I was having loose conversation with a professional sports writer. I have a cool side and the geek side. The geek Strider is the one that spends 10 hours a day on here. This was a cool Strider time and when that one is doing his thing, geek does not present himself. Plugging BAS right there would've gotten: ".... :-| ....okay...." I didn't mention it when I met Gary Cohen or other media people either. Have been tempted around some sports people because conversation doesn't give you the chance to express too much of what you've done and who you are (like, "I know the f*ck outta sports. Go look up this site and read all the Strider posts and tell me I wouldn't be good for your staff.") but I resist because it would get nowhere. |

Between journalism advice, her telling me about athletes, the huge year-long story she's working on, and Jason Giambi's penis - there wasn't any place to slip BAS in. I'm trying to speculate on which dogs on the team would deliberately wet women's blouses. I wonder if they got Rachel Nichols cuz I think she was covering them in the playoffs one time. I can see Cano doing it. Matsui...then taking pictures. Oh, and she also said that Peter King has said that the best place to get information from football players is at the strip club so he'll hang at whatever titty bar they're at to get a story. And I'm sure it's strictly professional...just to get a story. |

Sure, just professional. No doubt about it. Speaking of cute chicks from New York.....tonight at my Criminal Justice class my teacher had a research analyst from the FBI Headquarters at Quantico (like 40 minutes from me) speak and do a presentation......she's from Long Island (looked like it, too) and got the accent going on and everything.......damn she was great to look at for an hour and a half. |

That sounds like a fun conversation to get to have as a student. So your what, junior in college? I'm a super senior now and for some reason I feel like your two years younger. Its cool that your so passionate about what your going to be doing. Good luck man, for real. Go straight to the top and get your homie some tickets :peace: My senior year in High School I thought I wanted to be a sports writter, but my grammar was pretty shitty and I was only passionate about baseball. Other sports just didn't engage me, not even track to be completely honest. Anyway about what she said...Cano and Sierra did the shirt thing. Not suprised about Giambi's c*ck, but I still wouldn't f*ck with him. The Bernie thing makes total sence. He seems shy and sensetive like that. Finally, you guys are going to kill me for this, but I feel for Jeter a little. The guy really seemed to have alot of personality when he came up, now it seems like being Derek Jeter has turned him into a robot. Think about it, he can't be a smart ass or dick in public...ever. I know people shouldn't be dicks in general, but come on we all are sometimes. Everything he says and does is pre-determined because he owes not only the yankees, the boss, torre, and his parents, but all of baseball. He can't be human because he isn't allowed to, because he's so rich, because he plays baseball for a living, because he dates hot women, because he's the captain of perhaps the most respected franchise in sports. If he shows even the slightes discomfort or annoyance or unhappiness then he is instantly an ungratefull slob. I know for the most part life is just one big party for Jeter, but I can see this being something that bothers him on some level. |

The term "generally vanilla, doesn't do much for me. Jeter is a ball player and has come up clutch many times in his career. I could care less his personal life. So far to me, he hasn't been anything but a good, true Yankee. I wonder what flavor some one like Dimagg or Maris would have been. Strawberry Fields forever... ;) |

I don't give a sh*t about Jeter's personality either. So what, he's boring, who the hell cares? What matters to me is what he does on the field, and he hasn't been the same clutch player the last few years, and that's why I get frustrated with him, not because his interviews are boring. I'd rather most of these guys not talk anyway, I wouldn't say Schilling is boring but I hate listening to that a-hole more than I hate listening to anybody in the game, I wish somebody would staple his lips together so we wouldn't have to hear him any more. Sheffield is another who needs to learn to shut it. |

Jeter gets laid by the A-list of females, so I'm sure he doesn't need any sympathy or us looking down on him. Haha. To be honest, and I'll take some flack from the coozehounds, but I think a little less about him over the fact he's still playing the field and hasn't settled down and found someone. What's the excuse? He's been in NYC, making millions, and is supposed to be a nice(albeit a bland personality apparently), classy guy. You'd think he'd be married by now. He's had years of playing the field off the field so to speak. But it seems every article about him, it's him doing someone else, and it's not people you'd think his personality would work with. He sounds like he goes for the brainless, ditzy type. You'd think he'd go with some intelligent, sexy business woman or professional like A-Rod has or the Rock who's married to one of the CEOs of Merrill Lynch. |

 My mother has said similar things. Weird hearing it from a guy. My take is - besides "I don't care what he does in his free time" - that he's enjoying being out-da-ass rich and having women think he's one of the "hottest hotties". If he can f*ck Vanessa Minillo, switch to Vida Guera, switch to Jessica Alba, switch to Scarlett Johanson, switch to Adrianna Lima, switch to whatever he's poking now - more power to him. He's a pussy conosuer (I just got home and I'm too tired to make sure that's spelled right so f*ck it, ya'll know what I mean) and he's gonna keep sampling until he can longer do it or grows tired of it. And I doubt he'll get bored as there's a lot of attractive celebrities he hasn't been inside yet. What I think he should do? I don't have an opinion. It's not something that ever crosses my mind unless it's brought up. Do I hold it against him? Nah, cuz I can understand what he's doing.
Nah. The pimp hand isn't that mighty. But I'd sell the dicky to get into the business. Gimme a job as an SI writer and I'll let Peter King jerkoff and cum on my ass cheeks. Homie, I see your post but I'm 2 seconds from asleep. I'll get to it in the morning-morning. |

Interesting takes on Jeter's personality. I think Homie may have hit the nail on the head though. I agree with Strider, Pballs opinion sounds odd coming from a guy. Who cares if he's a hound? Think about how many players are married and f*ck around anyway. Jeter relies on his family more than most and that's how he stays "centered", if you will. As long as he produces I don't give a sh*t what he does or how bland he comes off to reporters. |

Great conversation. And as a student, with them making an appearance, you kind of expect them to keep the [British voice] "Child...my objective is to inform. You are beneath me therefore you shall behave and remain attentive" face on. It was me and a group of writers from our paper and we were asking "What was your path to get to where you are?" type questions, like a bunch of wide-eyed kids meeting Elmo. But one of us wasn't saying anything (he's a shy fella) and she said, "How come you haven't said anything? What, you're thinking, 'This dumb bitch doesn't know what the f*ck she's talking about'?" That lets you know that someone isn't uptight and they're willing to be cool with you. From there, you can make it more relaxed and tell jokes which leads to casual conversation which leads to good questions. Really, cursing is a good cue. Same thing with Bill Bleyer of Newsday. I went to a journalism job conference and he was doing resume workshop. He gives out some good sample/bad samples and he says they're real resume's they've gotten from people. One of them is full of irrelevant info. "If you're like Mira (Newsday staffing or something like that), you see a billion of these. And this f*cking guy puts how many dishes a night he used to watch. Dickhead, what the f*ck does that have to do with journalism?" Then he even got into an argument with a co-worker who said that "Well, if the person doesn't have much writing experience, they can put stuff like that to show they're hard-working and well-rounded." He says, "The biggest thing we're looking for on the resume is experience. If you don't have it, then don't bullshit to fill space - we'll think of you as an a-hole. Include just what you've done as a writer. Don't waste our time." Other stuff and he was funny and real honest. So I'm like, "Yeah...I'll f*ck with this dude." Asked him for advice and he was really helpful. Wound up having lunch with him and it wound up with me getting introduced to the Newsday sports editor. Advice: If you're ever in a position like that as a speaker or making an appearance, loosen your tie and cuss a little for the chilluns. They'll feel more comfortable and everyone opens up more. Yeah, I'm a junior (20). I don't know old you are though. If I get there, I got ya. High school, I didn't even know we had a school paper. They had it as a class and I had it in my last semester. I did like 2 shitty articles. Men's track preview and a women's tennis game. An ex who I was still cool with (to this day, coolest chick I've ever met) was on the team so I just asked her for the information. I don't even remember if I got a copy of the papers but I remember for sure that my articles stunk. But college paper, I was older, had read more papers and started taking notice of how pros do it, got a chance to cover games, and there was more pressure to do it right. It worked out well because the sports editor was actually an acquaintance who I'd talk sports with all the time in one of my classes (neither of us paid attention in that class, we just discussed the Giants). I hadn't known he was the editor though until somebody in a different class told me, "Hey, if you wanna do sports writing, join the paper" and I saw him when I went in the office. Since we already had a relationship, he was able to talk to me a lot, give advice and be honest and after a while, in addition to game coverage, let me do a column on whatever I wanted. If nobody is perfect then practice can't make perfect, but it does make "better". You do a lot of it, you start finding flaws in previous stuff you thought was good. I've been on the paper like a year and something and already, I look at some of my first articles and I hate them. That Yankees thing I had posted about a year ago, I liked it then, but now I see a bunch of mistakes and realize the structure wasn't good for one article - it was too broad. Not something I set out to do (fine-tooth comb my old sh*t) but everytime you write, you pick up a little more and you find something you can improve on. I read or heard something a couple years ago about a former great columnist (won awards and all that sh*t) and in what I read/heard, the person said that this guy, when asked how long it takes him to write an article or a column, he said "It took me 42 years." The number of years he'd been in journalism. Now, I thought and think that's a "pfff" answer. Stop trying to be slick and answer the f*cking question. Minutes, hours, days? But I do see what meant. Everything he had picked up over those years went into his work so he'd have 42 years of experience and knowledge in his columns. My advice would be, even if you don't wanna do it professionally, see if you can do some articles for your paper. Even if it's just a baseball article you wanna pitch them, f*ck it, just do it. Hopefully - not really but - you're like 30 credits short so you'll have a couple more semesters. I'm gonna wind up being on that 7-year program like Jason White at Oklahoma - that guy was a senior when your grandfather was an 8th grade senior and he's probably still there. I don't take enough credits per term. I like walking around to 1 or 2 classes a day with no bookbag. How do you know it was Cano and Sierra? Inside scoop or "Yeah, sounds like something them guys would do"? I hope it's an inside scoop. Man, Giambi's big where it matters (in terms of fighting). He'd crumple us up like paper balls and play fungo. I don't feel for Jeter. I understand why he'd be p.c./p.r. and it helps him, but his life, at least from what we see and know, is 90% of the way to perfect. When you're making $19M per + endoresements and you're worshipped by millions and you've got Jessica Alba in position for doggy, some reporters thinking you're boring isn't even on the radar. Gimme $189M and call me boring. |

As a baseball fan. My greatest/nicest experience was meeting Mel Allen. He went out of his way to make you feel good. Met him at a NY Yankee Fest. His Autographed Baseball rests with other priceless memorabilia. The best part is, it sits as an only auotgraph on the ball. |

I was just assuming with Cano and Sierra because it makes the most sence, could be anybody. the only puerto rican on the team is Bernie, otherwise i'd blame them. It was like 6 years ago that I wanted to sports write. Since then I realized I wanna teach, so it all worked out for the best. I may still wanna write, maybe a children's book some day or something. I'm much better with language and grammar now. I graduate in may with an english degree, after a year of gradschool I should be teaching. I'm 22 now so i was right about the two years i guess my tie aint neva tight :supercool: Good lookin out. :peace: |
