Sorry, but I've been so totally emersed in the work and hockey that I've totally neglected this board. What are everyone's thought on this offseason's trades/signings? Mine: Good: 1) Signing Billy Wagner - This figured to be the season where we finally compete and to do so we desperately needed a top notch closer and we've got one here. The guy is as unhittable as one can get. My only hope is we are careful with him. He's got a long contract and we need him healthy for as long as possible. 2) Delgado trade - I did not like losing Jacobs, who looked like a very promising prospect, but Delgado is far more proven and we desperately needed a proven bat like his to take the pressure of Wright, Beltran, and Floyd. Hopefully, he meets expectations. 3) Signing Franco - I know he's old, but he has a history of winning and he can still pinch-hit. Should definitely be a good clubhouse presence. 4) Lo Duca trade - I'm shocked we were able to get such a good replacement so easily. He's a very good offensive catcher and should make a good tandem with Fidel. 5) The bullpen - It really looks like we've strengthened it, but you never know with bullpens. It will be important to give the key relievers adequate rest otherwise they may well wear down. 6) Our lineup - Looks very very good on paper: SS-Reyes 2B-Matsui/Hernandez,C-Lo Duca CF-Beltran 1B-Delgado 3B-Wright LF-Floyd C-Lo Duca/2B-Matsui/Hernandez RF-Nady/Diaz There's no real weakness there except maybe Matsui, who knows he must produce this year. The bench also looks good. Bad: 1) Benson trade - Where do I start? This was just plain stupid. I don't care if his f*ckin pompous, self-promoting, slutty wife was a distraction. The fact is the guy has great stuff and was very effective most of the time and we got nothing but a pile of crap for him. Most importantly, he ate innings which can prove invaluable to keeping the bullpen healthy and effective. We are going to miss him. 2) Seo trade - Why? Is he not Hispanic? The guy threw strikes and showed he can actually pitch. A solid guy to have as a backup if there ever was one. 3) As a result of 1 and 2, our rotation - Unless Soler or Humber crack the rotation in ST, our rotation figures to be Pedro, Glavine, Trachsel, Heilman, and Zambrano. That, to me is unacceptable. Zambrano has proven to be pure crap. Heilman excelled last season because the bullpen role allowed him to use his 2 pitches. Unless he's added a few more, I doubt he'll be nearly as effective in the starting rotation. Trax is a good 5, not a 3. At least he eats innings. Glavine really came on late last year, but may well struggle because he's OLD. That just puts too much pressure on an unhealthy Pedro. The same pitching that gave us a chance most of last season, may well be our achilles heal this season. Prediction: I'm going to go out and predict a maximum of 90 wins this year because even if our starting pitchers perform to potential, it still isn't that good. Pedro can win 20 games, Glavine, Trax. and Heilman maybe 10+ each, Zambrano can win maybe 4 or 5. Not what I'd call a top of the order rotation and we may well miss out on the playoffs again. I hope not. |

I predict 90-92 wins, I also think that Soler or Bannister will beat out Zambrano into the starting rotation, whether now or during the season |
