PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. -- Charting Pedro Martinez's progress has been difficult since he showed up for spring training. But every couple of days, there is visual proof, and seeing him toe the rubber yesterday was, in the words of pitching coach Rick Peterson, "a big step forward."

The Mets have tried to put a positive spin on every one of Martinez's brief workouts. The bottom line, however, is that he has done very little because of his ailing right big toe, and just because he climbed to the top of the mound, it does not mean Martinez is over the proverbial hump.

What he did yesterday was basically play catch with the crouching Bobby Estalella, throwing 45 "pitches" from the rubber. When it was over, Martinez, saying he felt "a little lost," didn't sound like he's ready to ramp up his workouts significantly.

"I'm out of shape," Martinez said. "I'm not at full shape. I'm just trying to get back to the mound, see how my toe is. My arm is not at full strength. I still have a lot of work to do."

Martinez already is a scratch for the first round of the World Baseball Classic, but he hasn't completely ruled out pitching for the Dominican team yet. As for the Mets, they maintain that Opening Day is not in jeopardy, but there doesn't seem to be any guarantee.

"I'm probably not going to stop until something goes wrong." Martinez said. "Without a leg, there's no arm. Because I want to have my arm in good shape, I need to have my legs in good shape."

Extra bases

Billy Wagner warned he would be a little ragged during spring training, and his first outing, as a starter, reflected that when he allowed a pair of singles and a sacrifice fly in one inning of work during yesterday's intrasquad game. Aaron Heilman was touched for three hits and two runs in his only inning ... Bret Boone was a no-show yesterday for "personal reasons." Steve Trachsel, scheduled to start tomorrow's Grapefruit League opener, went home because of a stomach virus.
