Bonds calls this his last season -- HR record or not
ESPN.com news services

Barry Bonds is preparing to enter spring training for his 21st -- and, he says, final -- Major League Baseball season.

The Giants slugger, who is 47 home runs shy of Hank Aaron's all-time record, told USA Today on Sunday he plans to retire after this season -- with or without the home run record.

"I'm not playing baseball anymore after this," Bonds told the paper in a telephone interview from his California home. "The game [isn't] fun anymore. I'm tired of all of the crap going on. I want to play this year out, hopefully win, and once the season is over, go home and be with my family. Maybe then everybody can just forget about me."

Bonds, who is in the final year of a five-year, $90 million contract, told the newspaper he is worn out -- tired of being a focal point because of his pursuit of Aaron's record and allegations of steroids use that have dogged him for years.

:fyou:

Cuz he hasn't passed the fat white man yet.

I hope he hits 50 homeruns (he won't) this year and comes back next season to pad his lead. I love it that people hate him and I wanna see records broken.

He needs to get the record so that he can sell autographed bats on QVC for $250.00 instead of $225.00.

Record or not, there'll never be a better beisabol player than Babe Ruth. He did it in the pre-expansion shorter season dead ball era, hitting more home runs than most teams! Plus, he excelled at pitching too. Babe's idea of a performance enhancing drug was 2 cases of beer and a dozen chili-dogs. Ask MM, he was there. :peace:

He may pass Babe Ruth, but Ruth never cheated to get his records. Bonds is a piece of sh*t, always has been, always will be.

League BA when Ruth Played: .285
League BA when Bonds Played: .262

League OBP when Ruth Played: .353
League OBP when Bonds Played: .331

League SLG when Ruth Played: .400
League SLG when Bonds Played: .407

Your right about the homeruns. Its unlikely that anybody will be even close to the HR hitter Ruth was. And your right about Ruth being the better player. I think the term "dead ball era" is missleading though. :peace:

Ah-HA! The pitching was weak back then. So if you translate that to the modern realm - Bonds, by my calculations, is at 829 homeruns right now.

I heard on ESPN that after the USA Today comments, he said that he'd think about coming back for 2007 if his knee lets him. After I heard that, I thought, "$12M for one year. DH and f*ck up that short porch to pass Aaron and do it in pinstripes. The OBP in this lineup....Oooooo-weeee!"

It's convenient how he'll retire when he passes Ruth but doesn't pass Aaron.

I don't think that's much of a factor for him. I was joking when I said it. Bonds has a big ego and big ego says, "I don't give a f*ck who is who, I'm the best and I gotta prove it." He doesn't have some intrinsic adoration of Hank Aaron. I'm good with stuff like this and my feeling is that Bonds respects Aaron, but that's it. He sees him as another of the old dudes who he's better than and has a record that he (Bonds) deserves. You see how quick he backtracked and said he'd come back in 2007 "if"? Soon as he did the math and realized he wouldn't even have a chance to pass Aaron this year, he changed his mind. I'm telling you, 755 means infinitely more to him than 714. He's just a bullshitter.

No, the pitching wasn't weaker, the fields were HUGE. Every blooper caught by a left-fielder today was a basehit back then. That explains why the average was higher and slugging was lower.

Plus, they had those shoddy little gloves which were essential using their barehands, unlike players today who can have gloves bigger than they are. I'll guarantee there wasn't ridiculous movement on pitches as well aside from the knuckleballers.

I know - I think I've heard Yankee Stadium was 465 to center. I was joking, that's why I threw in the 800+ homeruns part.

Nah, ya'd both get teef knocked out for dat. Only real nigga whiteboys (who've earned their black stripes) are allowed to say it infront of brovaz and not come out bleeding. Them and the po-lice when they've got a knee in your back and are putting the cuffs on.

Oh, to their face, yeah. But in terms of the media, Ted Kennedy could say it and get away with it once, maybe twice, if he was being really really politically correct about it. But if George Bush said it, the word impeachment is used more than when Bill Clinton was in office.

For example, I was saying. Maybe just to relate it to the same position and the differing standards. If President Clinton said the N word when he was in office, he'd take flack, but it would roll off his back quickly. If President Bush did it now, there'd be "outrage,"

Everything rolled off Clinton's back. Remember when he was leaving office and there was the mini-scandal about him selling pardons and stealing the White House china and utensils? I said it at the time that despite the sh*t he's taking, it was worth it because in this world, this country, something bigger or a better story will come around in about a month. Unfortunately, it was 9/11. But since then, we haven't heard sh*t about it.

But yeah, Clinton is more likely to get away with it because he's seen as "the closest thing to a black president we'll ever see" and was liked by black people. Bush, for more reasons than just being Republican, he'd take 10x the heat. The party does have an effect, but not as much as you're thinking. John Kerry would take almost the same amount of heat if he said it. We don't like rich old white men, period, so it's an offense no matter which politician it came from.

We're so politically correct, anyone that isn't black using the word is going to get heat. That's why I said Dems could get away with it once or twice. They wouldn't be able to do it regularly, that's for sure./

the fields were bigger so it turned fly outs into singles, singles into doubles, doubles into triples, and triples into Inside the Park Home Runs...plus since the fields were bigger HRs were harder to hit

CF was bigger... left and right were still pretty small (now im sure some one will correct me). But wasnt left in the polo grounds like 212 feet, i remember i spoke to Gate on this once.

Anyway, allow Bonds to travel back in time and play back then, even without steriods he breaks a thousand homers, easy. Basiclly batting practice fastballs.
