PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. -- Jason Scobie certainly looked comfortable as he milled about the home clubhouse early Thursday afternoon at Tradition Field. Sporting a turquoise golf shirt and a few days worth of stubble on his face, the slender right-hander seemed to blend right in, quickly displaying the calm sense of belonging that comes from years of being in such a setting.
If Scobie were auditioning for a part in a play, the image he presented would most assuredly win him the role. But the part he's hoping to land this spring has nothing to do with looks and everything to do with ability. The former 15th-round pick out of Louisiana State University is looking to earn a spot on the Mets' staff, a feat, if accomplished, that would be nothing short of remarkable.

Scobie, 27, was drafted three times, twice while at LSU, finally going to the Mets in 2001. He's made a steady, albeit unspectacular climb up through New York's system, putting forth a career year in 2005 when he led the organization in victories [15] while pitching for Triple-A Norfolk. Though Scobie has a 29-24 career mark with a very respectable 3.27 ERA in parts of four Minor League seasons, he's rarely, if ever, mentioned when the topic turns to prospects in the Mets' system.
