PORT ST. LUCIE — Even though the Mets have revamped the set-up corps in front of Billy Wagner, questions remain about that crew. Wagner, however, seems to have faith in the Duaner Sanchez/Jorge Julio/Chad Bradford bridge that's been assembled.

"You look at their track record, they're very qualified. They probably have better stuff than most closers, if you look at it," Wagner said yesterday. "So I look at it as an advantage that guys can go out there and pitch the seventh and eighth like it's the ninth inning. That's a luxury."

The thick-legged Wagner — who later added that there's still room for improvement for himself and the entire bullpen this year — threw off a mound yesterday, and faced a batter each from the left and right side, drawing a crowd of minor leaguers and reporters. Wagner, who is in camp early (he said that's typical), said he has not yet met all his new teammates. And there's one person in particular he's looking forward to talking to.

"One guy I want to spend time with is [new catcher Paul] Lo Duca," Wagner said, citing the upside for the two parties becoming fast friends. Added Wagner, "He actually caught me in the [2003] All-Star Game in which Jason Giambi hit a bomb off of me, so I told him, I said, 'We've got to change some things.' "

Wagner, who along with Lo Duca and Carlos Delgado are the Mets' biggest additions to the Mets this offseason, is excited about what the team could be poised to do.

"I think the expectations are what I like; that's what I like," he said. "I like having the opportunity to play on a team that is expected to compete; not just to get to the playoffs, to compete and be in the World Series. I think that's what every player wants to be in. And when you've got the experiences of Pedro [Martinez] and [Tom] Glavine and your everyday players, I think it's going to help the younger players and help myself to work harder and be ready for the playoffs."

Aaron Heilman comes into this spring training as the probable favorite to win the vacant fifth starter's job.

Asked if he felt the job is his to lose, Heilman said, "I feel like it's mine to go out and prove that I can do it and do it on a consistent basis."

Duaner Sanchez can potentially be one of the best set-up men in baseball. With Sanchez, Schmoll, and Bradford, the bullpen is the least of the Mets problems.

I'm more concerned about the rotation and 2b.
