as a spring training instructor.

This is great for a guy like Reyes and Anderson Hernandez. Would like to see him help them a little bit with their plate discipline. Some base running tips would be nice also.

Hopefully this leads to a bigger coaching role down the line with the Mets for Rickey.

It’s important to have him just in case the Mets make the playoffs. He can teach them how to play cards during the games.

First they bring an Alomar back, then they bring back Juan Samuel, and now Rickey Henderson. Omar really doesn't give a crap about what these guys have done to the organization in the past, does he?

Can't wait for Coleman, Saberhagen and Bonilla.

What was Juan Samuel hired to do? I missed that one. I guess he was fired when Trammell was in Detroit?

In a press release issued today the Mets announced that Rickey Henderson will be with the team for 10 days in Spring Training as a Special Instructor.

In addition to working with some of the younger ballplayers on baserunning techniques, Rickey will also be hosting the following seminars:

[x] Super/System: A Course in Clubhouse Poker
[x] Talking Rickey: The Art of Third-Person Discourse
[x] Better Know a Teammate: Tips for Remembering Guys You Used to Play With

I think it's a good move as long as he doesn't teach Jose Reyes how to be a complete jerk.

From Ben Mallers' Rumors and News:

Quote:

In 1999, Rickey Henderson was accused of playing cards with Bobby Bonilla in the clubhouse during the Mets' extra-inning loss to the Braves in Game 6 of the NLCS. Asked if he will be teaching cards to the younger Mets next month, Henderson laughed. "I think playing cards gave me the opportunity to relax in the game," he said. "It gave me the opportunity to go out there and play the game that I played so well."

What a moron, yeah poker helped me relax at my job too....until I got fired for playing poker at work....

:serious:

What about when he was playing cards in the clubhouse during the playoffs and had an ever-present attitude towards Bobby Valentine and the team? Did you like him then?

Henderson's a scumbag.

02:19 PM - read: Fox's Intro to Juan Samuel the Manager

...posted by Matthew Cerrone...

…for those who only think of Juan Samuel in the context of Lenny Dykstra and Roger McDowell, it’s time to move on…

In the Press & Sun-Bulletin, John Fox introduces B-Mets fans to their team’s new manager, Juan Samuel…

For those, however, who just can’t accept Samuel, and would like to relive the agony of a departing Dykstra, check out this old column by David Vecsey in Sports Illustrated…

…by the way, several of you have emailed me asking where former b-mets reporter scott lauber is…you’ll be happy to know that he is covering the phillies for the courier-post online…
