Giambi unveils hospital's kids' center
02/07/2006 3:53 PM ET
By Bryan Hoch / Special to MLB.com

NEW YORK -- Jason Giambi may never shake his West Coast pedigree, but heading into his fifth season with the Yankees, the slugger says he considers himself a New Yorker.

A week before the first Yankees begin reporting to Florida, Giambi was back in town Tuesday to help unveil The Zone, a state-of-the-art therapy and play environment in the Kravis Children's Hospital at Mount Sinai Medical Center.

Joined by country music superstar Garth Brooks and NFL Hall of Fame quarterback Troy Aikman, Giambi watched as the red ribbon was cut, officially opening the multimillion dollar facility to an eager group of children.

"New York is home to me now," Giambi said. "[I wanted] to get a chance to walk through that room and see the kids get a chance to get away from the doctors, play and be with their families in an environment where they have fun."

Giambi is a major donor to the Garth Brooks Teammates for Kids Foundation, which combined efforts with the Troy Aikman Foundation and the Starlight, Starbright Children's Foundation to complete the new facility.

A large area with a family resource center, an in-house television studio, a stage for live performances, craft and game rooms and more, The Zone promises a quiet, relaxing atmosphere for children with a view of Central Park.

The facility, the fourth in the United States and the first east of the Mississippi River, also offers an ultra-modern theatre, which patients will use for movie nights and virtual field trips to destinations like SeaWorld and the Bronx Zoo.

"There was one kid telling me he was going through all his medications and he couldn't wait to go down and play video games," Giambi said. "It definitely gives them something to look forward to."

Brooks, who celebrated his 44th birthday Tuesday, started the Teammates for Kids Foundation with Bo Mitchell in 1999 as a non-profit corporation to benefit children, with an emphasis on health, education and inner-city services.

An official charity of the National Hockey League that also works with MLB and NFL players, the foundation uses 100 percent of its proceeds for projects like The Zone.

During the press conference, Aikman revealed that Brooks had put up a "significant" portion of his own money to finish the project. Giambi said that Brooks' dedication made committing to the project an easy decision.

"It's real easy to go, 'Here, just give me a check,'" Giambi said. "But [Brooks] really makes us feel, as athletes, that we are a part of everything."

Like most athletes, Giambi prefers not to publicly discuss his charitable endeavors. But Oakland Athletics coach Ron Washington, who lost his New Orleans home in Hurricane Katrina, said he cried recently when Giambi delivered an unsolicited check for $20,000.

Brooks said the entire Giambi family, including brother Jeremy and his parents, have been extremely charitable.

"They give tons and tons of money, but you never know which boy it's coming from," Brooks said. "They're never going to speak up and say it."

The winners in the equation, of course, are the children. As evidenced by their smiles and laughter Tuesday, the facility promises to be worth every penny.

"It takes people with real vision to take their resources and make this possible," said Kenneth L. Davis, Mount Sinai's president and CEO.

Each year, Giambi said Brooks' foundation gathers for an annual appreciation party in Las Vegas, welcoming some of the children who benefit on a daily basis from donors' generosity. Giambi said he is already looking forward to the next event.

"There's nothing more special than seeing excitement on a child's face," Giambi said.

He's a first baseman, not a centerfielder, he'll be useable out there.

This guy is a fatty. He's strong, but anyone who doesn't think he's a fatass is kidding themselves. He looks ridiculous.

I honestly don't see him as fat. Body fat, certainly, but fat people, those are ones that don't earn what they got. Giambi looks thick. My dad at Giambi's weight and size is just round. Giambi has muscle. Hell, he doesn't even have a double chin. His neck is muscular. I think regular people that are small can be more "fat," because they don't address any area of their body, and they will surprisingly be composed of more bodyfat than these guys that look fat. Thin people that don't workout have a hellova lot less to offer and less excuse to have fat that a guy like Giambi has. It's just annoying to hear judgement being passed on a guys looks that from all accounts busts his ass to get where he is. I'd rather pass judgement on those that don't workout if anybody and have legitimate issues.

Just because he might sh*t out something the size of you and with more personality don't mean the guy is fat.

I agree. Bengie Molina is fat. Jason Giambi is a big guy that just isn't cut. Big difference imo.

I don't necessarily agree that he isn't cut either. We don't see the guy's body. He's always had some cuts on his arms, and his neck looks muscular. I'm sure he ain't got it all going on and a 6 pack, but it's well overstated. When I was bulking, I would have gladly gave up my 8 pack and cuts to get Giambi's density. I was eating hamburgers with chicken as the bun back in the day hoping to get that big. Cuz at that size, with that strength, you can be a beast. It's rare to stay thin and get that type of muscle and power.

What's your point? Your face is going to change when you bulk up. It's just natural. Why the hell are you even commenting; you know nothing about working out

I know plenty about working out. When I was at my biggest, my face didn't plump up like a pumpkin. He's probably pigging out and partying it up in Vegas, along with working out. Giambi is both fat and strong. I'm not knocking his stength. He works his ass off. It doesn't mean he's not fat too.

Oh, ok, you the track star and soccer player, you really have great bulking experience. Newsflash, 160 to 170 is not bulking.

There's a massive difference in bodies between those Giambis. How you cannot fathom your face changing from college rookie card to full-grown player in his 30s is beyond me.

That's THE POINT OF BULKING. To eat high caloric totals and lots of protein.

I don't see how track or soccer are relevant considering I didn't play either at the college level. Of course a face is going to change into your 30s, but that big of a change is not normal. Giambi's face now is FAT. You could work out and be big without having a FATASS face. He was big in Oakland, his face was bigger than those Team USA pictures, but it's never been this FAT.

My bragger has nothing to say about track and/or soccer? I figured you were like Arnold and got into working out for your calves and started competiing in Mr. Olympias. Imagine the ego you'd have, as if it isn't big enough already. Enlighten us. What was your "bulking" experience?

It's the head that is not supposed to grow. Your face can swell. Your head is not supposed to expand. I just don't see why his face matters. It means nothing. Our faces change all the time. He doesn't even have a double chin.

I enjoyed soccer and track. That's all I have mentioned on here. I would never brag about them. What's to brag about? Your obsession is sad.

As for my bulking, I guess I never bulked in the sense that you and Giambi did. I never ate like a pig while working out like a fiend for the sole purpose of being as big as possible, no matter how silly it looked or unhealthy it was. I lifted to gain muscle mass. I didn't eat like a fat slob at the same time.

Why are you taking a few people you don't know calling Giambi a fatass so personally?

There's no obsession. I don't even hate you anymore. Strider has healed me. But I just find it funny how massive an ego you got. You bragged in the past, but you're going to take it easy now when I call you out on it. Fair enough. If you were that easy to change, I got no problem with that. I'll even let you go knowing 135 Duryea Road Melville, NY>

That whole second paragraph is pure silliness. You have no clue what you're talking. You don't "eat like a pig" You eat protein, for the purposes of rebuilding and re-growing the muscle tissue you broke down. It's healthier to eat meats for protein than it is to take protein shakes. Sure, you should probably eat tuna more than red meats, but it's totally designed for muscle growth.

I got a problem, just in general, with people that talk about hard-working lifters in a negative light, in terms of their hard-work. I hate steroid bashers more than anything. It's one thing if people calling Giambi fat were in great shape and had the ability to pass judgement.

I have mentioned many times that I had a great time in high school, including sports. That's not bragging.

I'm sure Invisionfree will enjoy this post, as well as some others. Keep it up. Ruin all of Big Apple Sports for everyone else. I'm sure they'll appreciate it.

On that note, MM, I guess it's time to lock another thread. I made the mistake of calling Giambi a fatass and this guy's normal routine kicked back into gear.

I'm not ruining anything. I'm talking about my knowledge, in relavance to Giambi's situation. I've contributed to this thread. Just because you want to argue with nothing doesn't mean the thread has to be locked.

I'm serious. Can't you feel the candles coming from me? I'm calmer when it comes to you. I shouldn't let you get to me and you haven't. That doesn't mean I ain't going to point out when you talk out your ass; which is very common for a 30 year old college grad that thinks they're the sh*t. I'm a wannabe scout? Absolutely. So is everybody here, just like we're wannabe General Managers. What else you got?

You clearly had a staff member, obviously your buddy Strider, provide my IP address. That makes it even more interesting, knowing a staff member was involved in your little game of Internet stalking. I'm sure they will take that into account. I'd think a grown man like MM would handle things the correct way since the teens and 20 year olds clearly don't know how to, but hey, if they want the board shut down, so be it.

I discussed the subject matter. The subject was "fathead." You brought this off topic, as per usual.

Off-topic? The fact you were talking about something with no knowledge on the subject was what lead me to ask you what your experience was. Next time, don't post on it at all if you can't backup what you're saying. Of course I'm going to ask your personal experience when you're talking out your ass. If some topic was "Giambi benches 500 LBs" and someone mocks it, I'm going to relate it to them, even if it was off-topic. It really relates to the point anyways. What your experience is relates your knowledge and understanding on the subject, or lack thereof.

I'll use the old tMs abbreviation to clarify what I was saying. Jason Giambi, while strong as hell, is a fatass, IMO. It doesn't really matter how I back my opinion. It matters that I, along with others, think he is fat.
