if your political thinking seaps into your practical thinking, i got to believe i should be telling the person "f*ck you" and giving them sh*t for their birthday

You say thank you very much. If it's a token gift, don't worry about it. Something expensive then reciprocate in some manner.

What if their birthday was on Christmas?

Then your screwed

As for Cano's comment...

That was unnecessary. What happens in the politics forum stay in the politics forum, you asked for what you should do and I gave you my opinion. you don't need to be an a-hole about it

Me and a co-worker exchanged gifts this year, and I ended up getting more money spent on me than I spent on her......we both sorta knew what we were getting each other, so originally it wasn't a problem. I got her a CD (cost about 12-13 dollars) and I wanted a gift card to Guitar Center (I figured she'd get me one for 20 bucks). Well, we exchange on Christmas Eve at work, and she ended up getting me a card for 25 bucks and a bottle of Bacardi. So she spent waaay more than I did on her, and I felt bad....but she told me it wasn't a big deal and that the bottle was a last minute idea that she just threw in....I felt really guilty about it but there wasn't anything I could do.

ray, it's pretty funny that your response is like the only real one, so i have to respond to it, lol.

i don't know if presents ever really are equal in value when you exchange them, so you shouldn't worry about it. but what would you have done if you got that stuff and didn't get them anything. that's really my situation

I probably wouldn't have accepted it.

True.....I'd accept it, but make sure the other person knows why I didn't have a gift for them. You know, make sure that I explain the fact that I had no idea we were exchanging gifts this year. Don't just accept it and say "oh thanks" and let them stand there expecting you to hand them something. Or see if they're ok with you not accepting it....you gotta feel the situation out.

Ray, it's obvious why she spent so much on you. But it doesn't apply to Canos situation.

I'd send a thank you and that's pretty much it, most of the time it's not from friends, it's from family, in my case at least.
