From Mike Vaccaro's article in today's NY Post:

Since then, it's been a much different, much more unsightly Division Series roll call for Johnson:

1997, Mariners vs. Orioles: 0-2, 5.54 ERA.

1998, Astros vs. Braves: 0-2, 1.93 ERA.

1999, Diamondbacks vs. Mets: 0-1, 7.56 ERA.

2001, Diamondbacks vs. Cardinals: 0-1, 3.38 ERA.

2002, Diamondbacks vs. Cardinals: 0-1, 7.50 ERA.

By any measure, those are some ugly numbers. He's pitched in some tough luck, and in at least one instance - Game 1 in '99 against the Mets - the ERA looks worse than it should because Edgardo Alfonzo hit a grand slam after he was lifted from the game. But numbers are numbers. Since '95 he is 0-7 with a 4.93 ERA, and that is exactly what the Yankees don't need tonight.

I feel so much better knowing he takes these wonderful ALDS numbers in to what is no doubt a must-win tonight. <_<

Jeter, A-Rod, Sheffield, and Matsui HAVE to stop playing like losers starting in this game. If we can turn it in to a slug fest we should be able to win, but I'm not confident in these four clutchless wonders, because they haven't given me reason to be.

If here 14-0 with a 0.00 ERA, you would still expect him to get clobbered.

well, since he has a series ring and a world series mvp, despite the fact andy pettitte handed him games to arizona anyways, his reputation in the clutch is very overrated. however, hes not who im worried about in this series. if he pitches bad, unless it's a disgusting blowout, the blame for the loss would be on the offense. no reason not to hit paul byrd. no real reason at all. but yes, when we got him, i did have to put my joy to the side, since some of his performances have been killers. arizona could have repeated in 02 if he stepped up in game 1. by getting shelled, he totally took the momentum away. the eras show you he didn't lose pitcher's duels either, aside from the houston-braves series. he earned his losses

1998 he was very good, Even that 2001 ALDS against St. Louis wasn't terrible. All the other ones, though he was freakin' brutal. 1999 was especially horrendous. I remember I wanted him to knock the Mets out of the playoffs so bad, so outside I have the Yankees/Rangers series, Mets/DBacks was the one I watched the most, and RJ pitched like absolute sh*t.

This sums up how I feel about him in his start tonight or tomorrow:

Don't worry about RJ. Worry about Byrd shutting us down with 85 MPH fastballs.

Good point. He's got no stuff and a weird delivery that could/would be used as an excuse. :no1:

i'll telling you guys right now. if we get shutdown by byrd, f*ck the stats, i know he's decent, i will flip to say the least. he does have stuff, a nice decent sink, but he could come out like quantrill tonight as well. even if he's on his game, i want us singling and doubling him to death. he shouldn't be able to k anyone, well aside from maybe jeter, a-rod, and bernie, since they seem to be able to k against us

Why flip? I'm half expecting it. How often has this team been shut down by people who have no business leaving that game with a better line than 1.2 IP, 6 ER?

it's different to me, since it's post-season, must win, using our ace, at the stadium, against a guy that doesn't even keep guys off balance. his entire game is having guys put the ball in play. he shouldn't k more than 3. i understand your thinking though, but im not expecting us getting shut down. i might regret that though

You called it, but I wish you were wrong.

His lumbago, sciatica and arthritis acted up because of the weather. The mofo didn’t put enough Bengay on. Tonight’s game was one of the reasons the Yankees got RJ. You can’t go out there and pitch like Matt Clement. He pitched worse than Paul Byrd.

Yeah, this was brutal. Chacon makes his debut in the playoffs tomorrow though, and has shown that he likes the pressure. Hopefully he can get us to Game 5.

I hope so, but you’re asking a lot out of guy who was pitching in Colorado until recently. What pisses me off about RJ is that a really great pitcher can go out there in a big game without his best stuff or command and fight and claw and battle and keep his team in the game. Unless RJ is firing on all cylinders he sucks.

Agreed, he's one of the greats going by the numbers, but I do think his big game prowess is a bit overrated by some. There's a reason he's 7-9 career in the playoffs now.
