Manager Willie Randolph will have to assess not only the players, but also the coaching staff that he helped assemble. There may be some tweaking after a season that has been a step forward, but still not satisfying.

"We're going to have to sit down and talk about that when it's all over," Randolph said. "We'll sit down and evaluate the whole staff and go from there.

"They did a great job. Everybody on my staff deserves a lot of credit. They did a great job."

Though Rick Peterson has gotten most of the attention for the ups and downs of the pitching staff, the one most likely on the ropes is hitting coach Rick Down. While Randolph has taken pains to credit him for the hitting of Cliff Floyd, David Wright and Jose Reyes, more than one player has expressed appreciation for the help they have gotten from Howard Johnson, who could wind up being promoted from Norfolk.

Vacation plans

Mike Jacobs had his plans for the Arizona Fall League changed when he got the call-up from the Mets' Class AA affiliate to the major leagues in August. But he's not done when the season ends.

Jacobs will get about two weeks to head home to San Diego before departing for Venezuela, where he will play winter ball.

HoJo over Down makes sense. I wouldn't be surprised to see new 1st and 3rd base coaches too. Manuel and Acta seemed like Minaya guys, now Randolph has more of a handle on the team.
