Pitches, pitches everywhere There's been scuttlebutt in the media that Mets pitching coach Rick Peterson's job is in jeopardy. It doesn't make much sense, given how well the Mets generally pitched this year - with the notable exception of never-should've-closed Braden Looper. It makes so little sense, in fact, that Mets general manager Omar Minaya and manager Willie Randolph recently met with Peterson, for the purpose of telling him to ignore such rumors. "You look at our staff, the numbers, where we stand, I think it's fair to say that our pitchers have done a very good job," Minaya said this past week. "A part of that should be credited to Rick Peterson." It's apparent that Tony Bernazard, Minaya's right-hand man, has initiated a smear campaign against Peterson, who rubs some people the wrong way with his garrulous personality. Bernazard is the same genius whose own, belligerent personality helped turn Carlos Delgado away from Shea Stadium, toward Florida. If there's any doubt over Peterson's worthiness, Tom Glavine, the Mets' re-made lefthander, submitted a testimonial. Said Glavine: "He's had a big impact for me ... He was very confident that if I made some of the changes he was trying to get me to make, they were going to work, and I was going to have success doing it. And you can't argue with him now." |
