Reyes plans winter hibernation

After playing his first full healthy season with the Mets, shortstop Jose Reyes has decided to take the winter off.
Instead of playing baseball for Gigantes de Cibao in the Dominican Republic (for whom he played last winter), Reyes will "stay home with my family" once he returns to the Caribbean island. That's good news for manager Willie Randolph who had planned to "discourage" Reyes from playing in the D.R.

Before Reyes played in his 151st game last night - he played a total of 122 games the previous two years after battling various leg injuries - Randolph admitted he had "been kind of walking on egg (shells) with" the 22-year-old Reyes' overall health.

"I really haven't had an opportunity to give him as much rest," Randolph said. "After having a couple tough years with injuries, he's dedicated himself to staying in the lineup. He works hard behind the scenes. He's always stretching in the trainer's room. Being young helps that, but there's a lot of maintenance that goes along with it."

Still, Randolph said, "I hold my breath a lot. He wants to show he can play every day and that's great for a player to adopt that regimen."

Reyes said later that he stretches about "45 minutes" before games. "In the past, I was not working on my legs," he said. "Now, I know my body better."

Reyes led the NL in steals (57) and triples (16) entering last night. He wouldn't rule out playing in a winter ball exhibition game or two, but said because he has taken "a lot of ABs, I'm going to rest a little bit, probably."

Reyes said he would watch teammate and fellow Dominican Victor Diaz play during the winter.
