A Carlos Beltran-for-Manny Ramirez trade makes sense; Boston execs like Beltran and Mets general manager Omar Minaya likes no one more than Ramirez. However, word is Beltran badly wants to prove he can make it in New York and likely would invoke his no-trade veto rights to kill such a trade. One American League official put the likelihood at "10 percent" for that deal, which was first reported in USA Sports Weekly. Another complication: Ramirez gains trade veto power this winter. And Manny being Manny, it's hard to guess what he'd do. Regardless, Beltran insiders believe he is determined to make things work here. Months ago, he began building a home on Long Island, a strong sign that he has no intention of agreeing to leave. People close to Beltran believe he'd do better with a strong righthanded hitter behind him (i.e. Ramirez, whom the Mets will go after even if they don't trade Beltran for him). Teams frustrated Beltran by pitching around him early, but he has no one to blame for expanding his zone later. It's no surprise the Mets crave Ramirez. Since Newsday reported last October that Ramirez was one of Minaya's top targets, he has tried hard to get him twice. One Mets official lists their three main needs, in ascending order of importance, as: 1. A starting catcher. 2. A proven run-producer. 3. Bullpen. "The bullpen's an absolute necessity," the official said. It's almost certain we're seeing the final days of Mike Piazza here. This has been Piazza's least comfortable year as a Met, as he's receded into the background. Piazza looks lonely with his old Mets buddies gone. "The Last of the Mohicans," Piazza calls himself. The next catcher will throw better than Piazza but won't match Piazza for power or literary references. The top catchers available include Bengie Molina, Ramon Hernandez, Brad Ausmus and Kenji Jojima. But Mets people are reticent about making another foray into Japan after Kaz Matsui didn't cut it. A great get for the Mets would be closer Billy Wagner. After Wagner, there's a drop-off on the closer market, to Dustin Hermanson and Bob Wickman, not counting Trevor Hoffman, who's unlikely to leave the improved Padres. The Mets might try to land a second baseman or first baseman. However, one club official said they view the $49 million left on Carlos Delgado's contract as prohibitive (as opposed to the $57 million remaining on Ramirez's deal). "Delgado's good, but he's no Manny," one NL official said. Alfonso Soriano isn't high on the Mets' list even though he'll likely be available. "We have enough missers," a Mets exec said. If he'd be willing to play second base, Rafael Furcal would be a great import from the Braves, who have Wilson Betemit to replace Furcal. Even if Lyle Overbay could be acquired, the Mets might not go overboard for him. The one to target with the Brewers is Prince Fielder, whom scouts believe will be special. In an extremely weak crop of run-producing free agents, Paul Konerko might be the best. But he is no fit for Shea and could be pursued by Boston. |

Manny will be a Met this winter, but it will not involve Beltran. Big Papi will then go into a state of depression with his boy toys Manny and Pedro in Queens and regress as a player in 2006. |
