2. New York Mets: The Mets made two big offseason acquisitions in Pedro Martinez and Carlos Beltran. Martinez has been phenomenal and Beltran has been anything but. You have to figure Beltran will be better in his second year with the Mets. New York can be tough on any superstar. Speaking of superstars, David Wright and Jose Reyes are on their way to moving into that class of players.

The Mets' entire starting rotation will return next year, barring a trade or two. And that rotation is deep and experienced. Because Martinez and Tom Glavine aren't getting any younger, they might need to plan for a little less production from the front end of the rotation.

The Mets are short offensively and in the bullpen. They need to upgrade at closer and the spots in their bullpen for the seventh and eighth innings. They also need at least one more big bopper in the lineup. Mike Piazza's contract will expire at the end of the season and free up about $15 million. The Mets also have some flexibility in the outfield because there will be interest in Cliff Floyd and Mike Cameron. They could possibly trade both Floyd and Cameron and replace them with the young Victor Diaz and a second big hitter.

The Mets have young talent, roster flexibility with marketable outfielders, pitching depth, a new club-owned regional sports network and money -- all of which add up to hope.

Yeah, we could be really good next year if Omar makes the right deals. What he says is obvious. Bullpen help and MORE HITTING!!!!
