"And We’ve Reached a New Low

While I'd love to believe that Willie Randolph can learn how to effectively manage a Major League team in-game, Wednesday should be Exhibit A in the trial of Randolph's incompetence.

You know things have gone pretty sour when Ted Robinson and Fran Healy are at a loss for words. You know things are really bad when Miguel Cairo is penciled in at right field.

To save loads of misery, let's just go over the final two innings.

ORDER OF INCOMPETENCE IN THE NINTH:

1. Willie Randolph: for putting Gerald Williams in RF for “defense” and for bringing the infield in with first and third, one out, winning by one.

2. Gerald Williams: for being absolutely useless in every aspect of life itself.

3. Braden Looper: hitting a righty to face a lefty and for just being Looper in the ninth. Unfortunately he now pitches to contact and the Mets do not have the defense to support him.

Notice that Kaz Matsui is not on this list. Matsui was credited for a very tough error in the ninth and even if he fields the ball cleanly, there's no chance he gets the runner at home. Randolph put him in an unfair position by drawing the infield in. The official scorer obviously has something against Kaz.

So we go to the tenth — and just to show us that he is not completely braindead, Randolph has removed Looper in favor of Roberto Hernandez. Bert proceeds to walk the first batter. Preston Wilson singles Johnson to third and gets tied up in a rundown. Really, the Nats were trying to give this game to the Mets.

Forces collide. Randolph's ineptitude against the Nationals' lack of talent. Who wins?

The Mets elect to pitch to Vinny Castilla with a runner on third base and two outs. Keith Osik is the on-deck batter. No, they're not going to pinch-hit for him, he's the last healthy catcher. Keith Osik is 36 years old. He has two hits in the Majors in the last two seasons. He has one at-bat in 2005. Lifetime OPS: .631.

Vinny Castilla is a fastball hitter. Roberto Hernandez is a fastball pitcher. Roberto Hernandez gives Vinny Castilla a first-pitch fastball over the heart of the plate that is lined into right field.

Keith Osik grounds out on four pitches.

So Gerald Williams leads off the tenth and reaches base when the second-worst player in the game makes an error, Cristian Guzman. With three players left on the bench (Woodward, DiFelice, Diaz), Willie sends Ramon Castro to the plate with the intention of bunting Ice to second. Ramon Castro has three sacrifice bunts in 744 career plate appearances. Castro does not even come close to getting the bunt down. Cairo grounds out, Diaz strikes out and the 3,000 fans at Shea go home.

Randolph lost another game for the Mets. Today was by far his worst performance of the season. What we're looking at is regression, not progression."

If he continues to rely on sh!t like Gerald Williams and Jose Offerman, he should leave immediately.
