Tiki Barber now knows exactly where his career will end.

The Giants and Barber have agreed to a two-year extension, or a new four-year deal depending on perspective, that will keep Barber a Giant through 2008. The deal calls for a raise of about $1.5 million over the next two seasons and then two additional years at about $11 million. He'll make $6 million in salary for this year's season.

Barber, a cornerstone of the New York sports scene, has long wanted to get a little bump in pay after last season's Pro Bowl campaign. However, rather than go public with his desire he and his agent have been quietly negotiating with the Giants for quite some time.

Although it's not the blockbuster that other big name backs are looking for, Barber was simply looking for a little more stability to remain in his home city for years. At the same time the team was able to give a little reward to a player who obviously deserved it.

This will most likely be the last contract of his career.

Good. This guy is a Giant and will go down in the pantheon of Giants. The only thing that will hold him back a little is if they don't win a Super Bowl during his time here.

as long as his fumbling problem doesnt come back, he should have another huge year, in which mostly everyone in the nfl will not notice how good he was. like strider and i observed, last year, statistically and with a bunch of factors working against him, tiki arguably had the best year for any running back in the entire nfl. thats phenomenal. hes the giants version of bernie williams in the 90s; somehow overlooked and underrated despite playing in the spotlight.

Tiki has been underpaid since the 2002 season. He was still on that '00 deal that paid him about $4M per. He played good little brainwashed with the company line foot soldier and now he's got reward.

Pete, I don't think the extension does anything to Brandon Jacobs. After this season, I don't see Tiki playing more than another 2 years. He hasn't carried that much so his body might not be as worn down as the average 33 year old RB, but he's got a lot of stuff going on outside of football - including a crappy looking off-Broadway play he's starring in. He's gotten offers to do broadcasting. He might wanna go back to Israel and be full-time peacemaker. And we don't know what the signing bonus is. If Jacobs emerges and earns the start as Tiki is declining, they can release him and most likely (what I think), he'll retire.

Agreed. I don't think of Tiki as a hold on as long as I can guy, especially with the other opportunities he will have. If he does decide to stick around, he's the type that would renegotiate so as not to handcuff the Giants' cap and be paid more in line to his role at the time. Who knows, if he does decide to hang on, he might be willing to become more of that third down weapon he was at the beginning of his career. Odds are Strider is right though.

September 9, 2005 -- Tiki Barber has always been adamant about his desires for the latter stages of his career. He did not want to play simply to hang on and had no intention of ever playing for anyone other than the Giants.
Actions this week likely ensured both. Barber quietly agreed to a two-year contract extension that keeps him with the team through the 2008 season. By then, Barber will be 33 and ready to retire.

"I know a finite number and it's within that range," Barber said yesterday, when asked how much longer he wants to play.

Class act, all the way around.

im glad he at least realizes he is close to being done.

I love the guy, but i dont want this to turn into a hilliard situation (even though hilliard wasnt all that good to beging with). But its obvious it wont so good.

hes alot better than hillard. Tiki was arguabley the best back in the league last year. Hillards never put over 1000 yards.

no doubt about it but to me at first glance it kind of looked like the hilliard situation.

Not having a 1,000 yard season as the #2 WR w/ Kerry Collins as the QB isn't a terrible thing. You can say, "Well, he was a high 1st rounder and never became the #1...", but as it were, he was a quality Z in his prime. If Hilliard had been what he was in his earlier years, the contract wouldn't have been bad. And the difference is that Tiki is coming off his best season and has gotten faster and stronger and has missed just 2 games since 2000. Hilliard was already done when he got the deal. The foot and leg injuries had done him in. Then he gained 10 lbs. hoping to become more physical and durable and all it did was slow him down some more. Can't compare the two.

Exactly, you can't compare the two, and I'm not able to look it up at work, but didn't Hilliard have 996 yards one season? That's basically a 1000 yard season. Comparing Tiki's extension to Ike's is completely irrelevant though.
