RICKY D. RE-UPS FOR ONE YEAR Soon-to-be 24, goalie was 23-18-5 with a 2.36 GAA in 2003-04 The Islanders have signed goaltender Rick DiPietro to a one-year deal. DiPietro, who turns 24 on Sept. 19, was 23-18-5 with a 2.18 GAA in 2003-04 with the Islanders. The Massachusetts native is currently at the Team USA camp in Colorado Springs and will report to Islanders training camp when it opens Sept. 12 in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia. "It's great news that Ricky's in the fold," said Islanders head coach Steve Stirling. "He is a very important player for our franchise's present and future." DiPietro was the first overall selection in the 2000 NHL Entry Draft, becoming the first goaltender ever taken with the first pick. DiPietro was a member of Team USA at the 2004 World Cup. The silliness of this whole situation was the Islanders offered him a 15 year deal. 15 years! Every team should learn from Larry Johnson's 12 year deal. |

It was a PR stunt. They knew he would never accept it, since he would have been responsible for insuring the last 10 years himself. |

I understand the reasons for it not being accepted, but how does that improve public relations? Simply showing you are willing to make a long commitment to a young player? |

yes its a ploy, you offer him 15 years and ricky loses leverage he then cant say the team doesnt care about him or want him long term for that matter. |
