The Giants also signed HB/Returner Chad Morton, who was recently waived by the New England Patriots, to a reported 1-year $450,000 contract. The Giants had expressed interest in Morton when the Redskins waived him in June, but Morton signed with the Patriots. Morton was placed on the Physically-Unable-to-Perform (PUP) List by the Patriots on July 28th with a knee injury (torn ACL) that he suffered in October 2004 with the Redskins. "He's a playmaker, a guy that's done it in the past, not only as a punt returner, but as a kickoff returner," Head Coach Tom Coughlin said. "Also, I think he can play some as the fourth back and be a guy who perhaps would be a third-down back or run from behind a team that's deployed with three or even four wide receivers. I think we pick up a little bit of depth there."

Yeah, off an ACL. It takes longer than 11 months to be back at full speed. They might be getting caught up in the name and past accomplishments. Jones came back for the pre-season finale and did good. We couldn't do better than signing a guy coming off a torn knee? A guy who has was on the PUP and just got released? :no1:

It sounds like Morton is healthy. He better be since they cut all of the guys trying out for the position.

The Giants signed former Jet Chad Morton yesterday, four days after he was cut by the New England Patriots. Considering last season's return man, Mark Jones, was one of 18 players cut by the Giants, Morton will be the starting returner when the season opens in seven days.

However, the most surprising move was signing Morton to a one-year, $450,000 contract after he spent the entire summer on the Pats' physically unable to perform list while recovering from surgery to repair a torn ACL in his right knee. On Friday, Tom Coughlin hinted that Jones' performance in the preseason finale (seven returns, 64yards) won him the job.

Obviously it didn't - not with the 28-year-old Morton on the market.

"He's a playmaker," Coughlin said in a statement. "(He's) a guy that's done it in the past, not only as a punt returner, but as a kickoff returner."

Morton (5-8, 203) has averaged 24 yards per kickoff return and nine yards per punt return during his five-year career, so there was no doubt he was more capable than the other players who auditioned - like Jones, Michael Jennings and Ataveus Cash, who were all among yesterday's cuts.

The only question was Morton's health after he tore his ACL on Oct. 31. But the Giants gave him a physical in June when they considered signing him as a free agent and they gave him another one yesterday.

it takes a while to recover from an ACL. Sometimes you are never the same, even though you could still play.

Mike peca hasnt been the same peca since he tore his acl in 2002.

I'm aware, but the Giants must be confident that he has recovered well enough to be the best option as their return man.

Morton really wanted to be here:

Quote:

Chad Morton was a member of the Patriots last week. While he was studying film of the Giants, New England's final preseason opponent, he recalls feeling wistful. He nearly signed with the Giants three months earlier.

"I kind of almost felt like it was a missed opportunity when I'm sitting there watching them and the [New England] coaches were talking about their team," Morton said. "I was thinking man, I miss New York, it was a great visit, maybe I should have stayed there in the beginning."

Funny how things work out. Morton, coming off surgery to repair a torn ACL in his right knee, never got in a game for the Pats and was released Tuesday. A few days later, the Giants worked him out again and signed him. Tom Coughlin confirmed that Morton will handle punt returns Sunday. Morton, 28, has averaged nine yards on 62 punt returns in his five-year career.

"I feel like I'm starting all over again," said Morton, who is familiar with the tricky Giants Stadium winds from his two years (2001-02) with the Jets.

i was only aware of morton's promise as a kickoff return man. did he do anything with punt returns with the jets? i had thought santana moss was their punt returner. theres a difference in skill to be able to kickoff and punt return. willie ponder averaged the highest amount of yards per kickoff return, but he cant punt return that well. just wondering whether morton has had a big punt return or anything

Remeber the Tim Brown-Raider Jets game a few years ago on MNF? Where they STOPPED the game to do all his ceremony sh*t?

Well Santana Moss got hurt that game and Morton had to fill in, he fumbled a pount which Oakland later scored on... :wall:

But their is nothing bad to say about his KR's, he can break one at any time...

thanks for the info. my point was that morton was a great kickoff return man, but i was not aware that he was a success as a punt return man, which is different, but which is what the giants signed him to do. willie ponder was great on kickoffs last year. morton was brought in, as far as i know, to return punts. i dont even think he has a history of it, or at least a good history of returning them. i could be wrong.

we dont need a kickoff return man, cause ponder and jacobs are prety darn good.

I dont remember mortan reutrning too many punts with the jets either, but i think he did with the redskins. Im sure he can and he is probably better then anyone on this team, save tiki but still.
