Maybe the Goodens could be cellmates?; Gooden finally turned himself in

I just heard Dwight Gooden is a fugitive after speeding away from a traffic stop. He was pulled over in downtown Tampa for weaving around, refused a field sobriety test, and then sped off. I wonder if they could arrange it so that he and Dwight Gooden, Jr. could share a cell. That would be a touching moment.

I've always loved Doc and Darryl going back to being a kid, but come on, Doc. How many more chances will George give him? He's going to screw it up eventually when George cuts him loose, he realizes how lucky he was to have a front office job with the Yankees, nobody else is hires him, and he goes broke. Then George will feel bad and give him chance #10.

Gooden wanted on DUI suspicion
Posted: Tuesday August 23, 2005 11:39AM; Updated: Tuesday August 23, 2005 11:39AM
TAMPA, Fla. (AP) -- Tampa police are looking for former baseball star Dwight Gooden on a felony warrant after he drove away from an officer who stopped him on suspicion of drunken driving.

Officials say Gooden left the scene of the traffic stop after refusing to get out his car to take a field sobriety test. A police spokesperson says the officer stopped Gooden's car because he was weaving in traffic near downtown Tampa.

Officials say police chose not pursue for safety reasons, but went to his two known addresses to look for him. They also contacted his most recent employer, the New York Yankees, and his mother.

Yankees spokesman Howard Grosswirth says Gooden hasn't worked for the team since April and officials don't know his whereabouts.

Gooden was out of jail on bail after a March domestic violence arrest. He's wanted on felony charges of DUI and fleeing police, and a misdemeanor charge of resisting arrest without violence.

How about "none" more? Seriously, stop f*cking up your life. Nobody gets this many chances in real life, he's had plenty and he's blown every one of them.

Enough is enough, time to let the chips fall where they may on his own.

No its not.

Why do we (people) always do that? Anything f*cked up, its sad. You won't be losing a second of sleep over this. I don't even care. I heard about this and just read about Vinny Testaverde being a possibility for the Giants. Guess which one I spent more than 2 seconds of thought on. It would be closer to sad if we didn't hear about Gooden getting arrested. It would mean that he OD'd on something and is laying dead a puddle of his own vomit.

I like the Vinnie idea. Can you post that in the Giants forum if it's an article (I can't access many sites from work).

Maybe that has happened already. After reading the article, I see Doc hasn't been to work since his April arrest. Maybe George is done with him. I agree, I don't blame him. He messed up too many times. It's his fault. Coke is one thing. It's incredibly addictive once you start. Knowing you shouldn't drink and drive is another thing. It's easily avoidable.

In some cases, I am. But really, are you heart broken or deeply sadened? I think most of the time, people just say that stuff. "Doc Gooden arrested...... Oh man, this is terrible news. Such a promising career and he wasted it. Promising life and he's wasting it. Uhh, this is so sad........ Ah well, back to downloading pictures of busty lesbians." I don't know if I'm heartless or just bold enough to say from the jump, I don't care. Doc Gooden's life doesn't affect me or anyone I care about. Doc Gooden isn't even a sympathetic figure anymore. He was blessed with everything and squandered it. He's been given chances and chances, f*cked those up. Was given more chances and he's f*cking them up. His screw ups shouldn't surprise anyone. And you're right about it being beyond sad it. It is, its gotten to the irrelevant stage now.

I honestly feel REALLY BAD for Doc and can understand and sympathize with what he is going through. It's a tough thing to handle and control when you get that deep into it. Others who don't have this problem may not understand, but my heart goes out to this guy. I know what fighting demons is all about, it's not easy but he needs to WAKE the f*ck up before he's dead! :no1:

I feel bad that this guy, who seems to be a decent person overall, can't get his life straightened out once and for all.

While I sympathize with his struggle, you can't forget that ultimately the blame for it lies at his feet for even beginning to abuse drugs and alcohol. I'm certain that its very difficult to beat addiction, but beyond hoping he gets better i'm really not sorry or affected by this news one bit.

He's dug his own grave.

I can afford a cab as well, hasn't stopped me from getting behind the wheel in a spot like that convinced I'm fine to drive. I think people like Doc and other including myself who have issues with drinking don't know those limits.

Do you have a rap sheet as long as the list of guys Gooden has K'd in MLB? He needs to learn his lesson after one of these many arrests, especially when he is out on bail from his most recent arrest, only 4 months ago.

Knock on wood....never been arrested for a DUI, hopefully that would wake me up but who knows. The stupididty is the driving....I agree, the problem itself though is the drinking, I feel for him on that.

Gooden arrested after turning self in on felony charges

Associated Press

TAMPA, Fla. -- Former baseball star Dwight Gooden, sought by police since he fled a DUI traffic stop three days ago, turned himself in at a county jail Thursday, police said.

Gooden, 40, showed up at the jail warrants facility about 5 p.m., police spokeswoman Laura McElroy said. He had been missing since early Monday, when an officer pulled over his 2004 BMW near downtown Tampa on suspicion of drunken driving.

He twice refused to get out of the car for a field sobriety test and then drove away suddenly, police said.

Gooden, who has a history of substance abuse and currently has a domestic violence charge pending in the court, was booked on a felony charge of fleeing police and misdemeanor charges of DUI and resisting arrest without violence.

He was being held under a $3,000 bond, a jail spokeswoman said. McElroy said Gooden is scheduled to appear in court Friday morning for a hearing to revoke his bond on the March domestic violence charge.

"We're relieved that he has come forward, and this may be the first step toward him getting the help he needs," McElroy said.

Police looking for Gooden had talked to his attorney, Peter Hobson, on Wednesday about the possibility of Gooden surrendering, but he did not indicate if or when it was going to happen, McElroy said.

Hobson contacted the Hillsborough sheriff's office earlier Thursday and made arrangements for Gooden to surrender, sheriff's spokeswoman Debbie Carter said.

A call to Hobson's Tampa office was not immediately returned.

Devil Rays manager Lou Piniella said Gooden's situation is sad.

"He needs to get his life in order," Piniella said before Thursday's game against Cleveland. "He's a good young man. He just needs to get his priorities straight. He's got a long life ahead of him and a lot of people that care about him. The only problem is he's got to help himself."

The 1984 rookie of the year and the 1985 NL Cy Young Award winner while with the Mets, Gooden went 194-112 with a 3.51 ERA before retiring in 2001. He also pitched for the Yankees, Indians, Astros and Devil Rays.

Gooden was arrested by Tampa police in 2002 on a drunken driving charge but later pleaded guilty to reckless driving and received a year probation. He was arrested in March and charged with hitting his live-in girlfriend in the face during an argument.

During his playing days, Gooden was suspended for 60 days in 1994 for testing positive for cocaine while with the Mets. He tested positive for cocaine again while on suspension and was sidelined for the 1995 season.

He recently worked for the Yankees as a special adviser but quit in April.
