Rangers acquire RHP Kevin Gryboski in trade with Atlanta; Acquire RHP James Baldwin on waiver claim from Baltimore

Arlington, Texas -- Texas Rangers General Manager John Hart announced today that the club has acquired right-handed pitcher Kevin Gryboski in a trade with Atlanta for minor league right-handed pitcher Matt Lorenzo. Additionally, the club has acquired right-handed pitcher James Baldwin on a waiver claim from Baltimore. Gryboski (#48) and Baldwin (#39) are both expected to join the Rangers during the club's weekend series against Oakland.
Gryboski, 31, has spent the entire season with Atlanta, posting no record with a 2.95 ERA (7 ER/21.1 IP) in 31 relief appearances. He was on the disabled list from May 7-21 with a viral infection, making one minor league rehab appearance before being activated. Gryboski did not allow an earned run in 11 games and 9.0 innings from June 8-July 8. He is 2-0, 2.70 (6 ER/20.0 IP) in 28 career games against the American League, all in interleague play.

Gryboski has compiled an 11-7 record with a 3.32 ERA in 221 career relief appearances, all with Atlanta. He was originally acquired by Atlanta in a trade with Seattle in January, 2002, and made his major league debut with the Braves that season. Gryboski has a career 1.64 ERA (2 ER/11.0 IP) in the postseason, all in the National League Division Series, as he has appeared in each of the Braves' 10 ALDS games in 2003-04.

Baldwin, 34, has posted no record with a 1.61 ERA (4 ER/22.1 IP) in 12 relief appearances with Baltimore this season. Originally signed to a minor league contract this spring, Baldwin had gone 3-2, 4.60 (24 ER/47.0 IP) in 8 games/starts for Triple-A Ottawa before being purchased by Baltimore on May 21. He was designated for assignment on Monday.

Baldwin has compiled a 79-72 career record with a 5.01 ERA in 250 games/202 starts over 11 seasons with Chicago (AL), Los Angeles, Seattle, Minnesota, New York (NL) and Baltimore. He was named American League Rookie Pitcher of the Year by The Sporting News in 1996, and was named to the A.L. All-Star team in 2000.

Lorenzo was the Rangers' fifth round selection in the 2003 June draft out of Kent State University. He has gone 4-9, 5.47 (61 ER/100.1 IP) in 19 games/18 starts between Frisco (AA) and Bakersfield (A) this season.

With these moves, the Rangers now have 38 players on the club's 40-man roster.
